Agree on this. I think both songs could have a place on a very good Bon Jovi album. Take a producer who knows how to layer guitars, bring each element and instrument out but without polishing it too much - someone like Don Was who produces The Stones. Then have the band record Every Road and put a little more time into every single element of BWC and you've got two very diverse tunes, both very much Bon Jovi.
Upon reflection, this is my biggest problem with BWC; it sounds so rushed. Like Jon sang over a drum machine, the horrible guitar overdubs; I have a feeling that since BOUNCE the band haven't recorded a single demo together, like they used to. All of them in the studio, playing live. If they had, I bet the BWC demo would sound much better than the finished product.
I just don't think Shank Stain works that way.
