Here we go again:

...lived a couple lives
Here's our history
For all to see
The smiles and all the scars
First, the rising, then the falling
Call this chapter "Shooting Stars"
Must sound good
From where you are

Sayonara, adios
Auf Wiedersehen, farewell
Adieu, good night, guten Abend
Here's one last song you can sell!
Let's call it "Burning Bridges"
It's a singalong as well
Ciao, adieu, good night, guten Abend
Play it for your friends in hell

Aaah check the box
Yeah! Mark this date
There's nothing more to say
After 30 years of loyalty
They let you dig the grave
Now maybe you could learn to sing
Or even strum along
But I ('ll give/ give / gave?) you half the publishing
You're why I wrote the song

Everybody, sing along!
Sayonara, adios
Auf Wiedersehen, farewell
Adieu, good night, guten Abend
Here's one last song you can sell!
Let's call it "Burning Bridges"
It's a singalong as well
Hope my money and my m...

Now i've listened to, and read the lyrics, combine it with the throw away, light-hearted nature of the song, it's got to have a been purposely recorded for this album as a dig.
That or their record company

Don't remember Jon ever going after someone so specifically in song before, I don't think its about Richie considering how interested Jon is in keeping personal relationships (and their breakdowns) in check. If it's about Richie it is a real dig for sure, but I think its about the label, we all know the "record industry" is something Jon has bashed before in plenty of interviews. The reasons I am inclined towards the label being the theme is because of the lines about another song to sell.

I am sure Jon will get asked about this song plenty, even on the next album cycle.

30 years of loyalty is the line. Is the forcing of Jon to release this that's what's forcing him to write this? I could swear he signed a new deal recently so this being the last album in a cycle doesn't make much sense.

Don't be in such a hurry! It takes time to listen, decipher and and type at the same time!
Bathroom break for me now, there's too much beer in "Burning Bridges", I'm feeling like I'm in an Irish pub!

For all the spite of the split, I don't think Richie has to learn how to strum or sing. I kinda hope it's a dig at the label, but who knows. Does Richie still get publishing for new songs?

that + "Now maybe you could learn to sing/Or even strum along".
That's why the song can't be about Richie + Jon wouldn't stoop so low.

EDIT

Yes, of course! He gets publishing rights whenever he's credited. The Sat./Sun. song is on his ASCAP list of songs, I've just checked.
