While I don't believe the track list....

The existing three have to be updated with keyboards, harmonies, pro guitar, and pro keys (pro drums are already there, just won't show until RB3 is released.) So they are more than likely coming as part of the pack. They've done this with tracks that were done by a studio band in the past to update them with the original version (see Rush.)

You don't have to. This isn't Guitar Hero.

If you want to download the trackpack and use it with RB2, you are free to... and it sounds as if it may be fine for you. However, RB3 is essentially a major upgrade of the software, think of it as a new Windows version. It adds the vocal harmonies, keyboards, and an improved interface including party mode which will randomly play songs while allowing anyone to jump in and out at anytime. It also adds Pro mode for the instruments. There is quite a bit of value to the upgrade.

Rock Band is all about Downloadable Content with the on disc songs simply being a starter pack. A good analogy is to see the Rock Band software as Itunes. In just the last few weeks, we've seen the release of Bob Marley's Legend album, an REM track pack with some fairly deep cuts, and Jimi Hendrix' Are You Experienced album. This is just the warm-up. I'm quite certain we are going to see many more big ones.

Yeah, with all this Rock Band being like iTunes things you can imagine how it was hard here in Brazil without XBox Live. I'm glad they launched the service here now!

Rock Band 3 DLC will not work in Rock Band 2.

You're right. I forgot about that.

It does boil down to why would you want to continue to use Rock Band 2, or 1 for that matter, with the upgrades coming in the new software. Even if you play the six button guitar only.... just the overshell upgrades should be encouraging enough.

Whatever, I have my game disc/keyboard bundle reserved already.

You were asking for it. That's what you get for running with the GH crowd.

Seriously though... it's always been obvious which one was going to grow and actually be about the music, not just a game.

I've never owned any of the GH or RB games and I have a question.

Will it be possible for me to buy the RB 3 game and then only a mic to go with it? Or, must I buy all the other instruments as well?

If you want to you can only buy the game and then use any usb microphone and you'll be fine. You can buy as few or as many instruments as you want.
