Default Greatest Hits compression

technical one: is it just me or is the mastering on the new greatest hits used stupid amounts of compression/limiting ? im listening to it's my life from the GH and its squeezed to the bone !! I wish I had my copy of crush here to compare it but I don't...

Explain what compressed actually means, because I have no idea.
IML sounds exactly the same on the GH as it does on Crush...at least on mine???

Compression in this context is referring to compression of dynamic range and peak limiting of CDs due to the music being mastered at high volumes. Or the "loudness war" as it's commonly known. It's affected the majority of albums of all genres (not just rock/metal albums) since I'd say the early/mid 90s.

Every new Bon Jovi album since Crush and all the remasters are compresses to hell so you'll find very little (if any) difference between the crush and gh versions of it's my life.

The only Bon Jovi albums that have any dynamic range are the original non-remastered versions of the first four albums, blaze of glory and stranger in this town. Keep the faith was the first album where things started to get louder and these days a bit more.

I would love to hear anything from keep the faith onwards with full dynamic range.

I don't understand how a non-remastered CD can sound better than a remastered one. Blaze of Glory is a masterpiece, yet sounds awful because it was never remastered.

I'm sure it was remastered, along with 'Stranger In This Town'?

Nope. In 1998 it was said they would be remastered in the future, but it never happened.

Both albums sound very good though, just as the old BJ albums never sounded bad. They just sound better remastered.
