Default Nice ...

Guys, I'm not sure if ya'll remember me from when I posted about H.A.N.D ( I was the one who didn't like it - first time ever for a Bon Jovi Record ) - but I am very happy to report Lost Highway is a much, much better effort.

Whereas H.A.N.D. sounded like it was written and recorded in about 3 days, Lost Highway appears to have had much more time spent in regards to the songwriting - it's more quintessential Bon Jovi where quality usually trumps anything else.

I'm not crazy about I Love This Town - but its saving grace is Sambora's solos - I often wonder why he's not featured more, but that's for another day, I guess. But, wait until you hear Seat Next To You - what an absolutely beautiful song!

Here are the best songs hands down (in order):
1. Seat Next To You - best melody and lyrics I've heard in quite some time
2. Any Other Day - This song is what
3. One Step Closer
4. Whole Lotta Leavin'
5. Everybody's Broken
6. Memory
7. We Ain't Strangers
8. Put The Boy Back In Cowboy
9. Got It Goin' On
10. Lost Highway
11. Summertime
12. The Last Time
13. I Love This Town

Looks like, and quite fortunately, I get to chalk H.A.N.D up as an exception and not the rule - whew!!!

This is a very good CD - It's not Slippery or New Jersey or These Days, but I like the sound and nothing sounds "rushed".

Here's to Richie getting cleaned out!

Got it today, don't know what to think about it so far.
Best track: "Any other day" Rest of it sounds like everything else on the radio these days. Think I'll put on TLFR instead.

Freddie, are you serious??? Okay, like I said it isn't early Bon Jovi, but everything on the radio is complete crap except for a very small number of artists, so you kinda have to judge Lost Highway in its time along with everything else out now and the quality is far superior to anything except maybe Coldplay and while I don't mind Coldplay, their music isn't exactly inspiring to me - but it is good music.

I find myself not skipping many tracks on Lost Highway, which usually is a good indicator right off the bat. Whole Lotta Leavin', Any Other Day, Seat Next To You and One Step Closer are superb tunes - if this was 1988, those four songs would easily be top ten and they probably will be on the country stations, except Any Other Day which is not country by any means.

I like what Jon is doing here - he realizes if he wants his band to remain relevant, he'll need to reach young people and the only young people that would possibly be turned on by Bon Jovi are young country listeners, which there are many. Pop music as it existed in the 1980's is dead and gone. What I enjoyed about the 1980's was the diversity - you could be 10 or 60 and still be able to reach the young audience - a la Dire Straits, Aerosmith, Grateful Dead, etc. Let's face it - the 1980's were corporate, but whatever has been transpiring over the last 10-15 years is ridiculously and obscenely coporate.

God I miss the 1980's music scene - constant breaking of new ground and unbelievably melodic music. Unfortunately, Bon Jovi is all that remains from that glorious era.

Finally got the album today ... after one spin I can't really give too much of a judgement, there were bits I liked and bits I didn't. Nice to hear some Richie solos again. Not overtly country, infact with different mixes taking out the additional instruments, a lot of them could be regular Jovi songs. Sometimes the additional instruments work, sometimes they sound a bit annoying. The whole thing reminds me quite strongly of Destination Anywhere, along with a bit of Undiscovered Soul vibe, but done in the modern day Bounce/HAND style

At the moment I'm considering it the band's mellower, more mature album (with some fairly obvious exceptions). I don't mind that its got lots of ballads, I think it's alright for them to do one album like that, although putting ballad after ballad with no break in the second half does wear a bit thin. The emotions here come across as real and heartfelt, which is always good.

On first listen, standout songs were Make A Memory, Whole Lot Of Leaving, Til We Ain't Strangers and Lonely. Any Other Day does sound (and the lyrics also seem to be) promising, I think I just probably expected it to be something a bit more based on everyone here raving about it! It sounds like one that'll definetly grow on me though

In fact, that's the impression that I get from a lot of the album ... it's a grower. One that needs repeated listens, and needs to be listened to properly, especially the lyrics. I'll report back after I've done both these things

Wow, I really am bewildered at the reviews where people think the CD is average!?!? I mean that is what I felt after listening to HAND. Lost Highway is more mellow and the overall sound is really sweet. The only crappy song is I Love This Town, but even that has some good Sambora solo's to look forward to.

I do agree with the Destination vibe, which I like because it's more mellow and less "pressed". When Jon presses, his voice sounds very annoying. When he sings a little lower and softer, his voice is more than tolerable - it's actually very nice.

Also, many of songs accused of being ballads, aren't ballads. Whole Lotta Leavin' is not a ballad; neither is Broken or One Step Closer.

Maybe it's just personal preference, but if you liked Bounce, which I did a very lot, then you'll like this album. If you enjoyed HAND, you probably will not like this CD very much. I appreciate the CD because every song escept I love This Town is playable. On Hand, I skipped every tune except HAND, I Wanna Be Loved and Who Says.

What I really miss about Bon Jovi are truly awesome studio albums which had at least one song that had extended intro's. Remember Let It Rock and Lay Your Hands on Me and Dry County? That's my only beef with The last 3 or 4 Bon Jovi CD's. The longer intro's are a sign you put more effort into a song and not only that but it makes the song sound better and more classic, in a matter of speaking. Think about the song Let It Rock and how original it is and how even though it might not be as catchy as later Bon Jovi tunes, it just seems like a better and more complete song.

Who knows, but Lost Highway is really smooth overall.

Default Wow ...

Goodness, Lost Highway is going to be a tremendously popular Bon Jovi album. After listening to tracks 6-9, I'll say those tracks are the most musically significant tracks since New Jersey's 7-10 tracks - Wild is the Wind, Ride Cowboy Ride, Stick To Yer Guns and I'll B There 4 U.

Some would question why this is a big deal. Well, isn't this where the hay is made in the music business? When your CD's latter tracks sound just as good, if not better than the first handful, doesn't that usually mean you've got a CD with a tremendous amount of sales potential???

Am I comparing Lost Highway to New Jersey? Absolutely not. However, listen to:
Any Other Day
Seat Next To YOu
Broken
Strangers

...and tell me those aren't some the best sounding back-to-back-to-back-to-back tunes the boys have put out in quite some time - everything fits from the lyrics to the tempos to the melodies and harmonies and bridges to Richie's soulful solo's - everything just fits in these tunes. Throw in the sweet One Step Closer at #11 and that pretty much puts this CD pretty much in These Days' league.

I'm telling you guys this CD has unlimited potential if the band promotes it aggressively.
