I know it sounds stupid but having always rented, never bought or built my own home I can't empathize in what the songs about (if its about having your own home). I also looked at it in a sort of hometown pride way:

"Outside the sky is coal black, the streets are on fire
The picture window is cracked and there's nowhere to run
I know, I know
This house is not for sale"

That says to me even though this neighbourhood is shit I'm still sticking here cos I love this town .

But I don't really empathize with that either cos I moved 200 miles away from where I was born and I'm happy living elsewhere!

Maybe its just one I'm not going to get a feel for!
Hi matrix15!
Of course there's as many interpretations as listeners, so I'm just telling you how I take it.
It isn't about the house. It's more about something you've "built". Your family, career or simply your life. It's all part of you and defines who you are. There's no plan to throw it all away because of things you can't influence. Kind of the world is burning but you're still who you are and you don't want to change.
Well, I hope I chose the right words to explain my thoughts about it.
