There was a lockdown, people were using social media even more than usual as there wasnt much else to do. Long gone are the days where they are going to attract new fans. It tanked as even the die hards and those who love everything Jon does didnt actually buy a copy of the album. If a fraction of those who bought tickets on the last tour purchased it then 2020 would have been a hit. For whatever reason, most chose not to.
A lot of people don't know the band is still together. Some people dropped off for Lost Highway. Some people were lost during Crush, that's the nature of promo. People are using social media more but I'm not looking up band I used to like 15 years ago, you know? That's the point of marketing campaigns. High profile appearances, live performances.

Hell, if a fraction of the people that see the band live bought the album after the show every album past The Circle would have sold better but they all tanked. Most chose not to for whatever reason.

None of what I listed above have to do with the quality of 2020. Labels and distributers warned artists not to put out albums during the pandemic because unless you already had a MASSIVE following (of which the band does not) how are you going to get out there and promote it other than online? I guess I just disagree with the notion that the pandemic had little to do with how current albums are selling for older bands with a dwindling fan base.

Yes but if you like an album you are more inclined to buy it

I guess the point I’m trying to make is that even with the biggest marketing push of all time the album would still have yanked as it’s so poor. Seb summed it up better than I ever could.

There seems to be a consensus here that the only reason the album failed was because it wasn’t marketed which I think is nonsense.

No, that's not the case. It reached number 5 in the UK. That's the same as THINFS. I'm saying with more promotion it may have got top 3.

Don't get this whole 'the album is poor that's why it tanked' - the judgement of the album comes after you've listened so to me, that has barely anything to do with sales.

I'm not saying that if Jon was on a few more TV shows, it would have been a number 1 album. Far from it. I'm saying that a tour alongside the album and more appearances and adverts and Beautiful Drug (which we guessed was new single with a video being recorded) it MAY have done more sales.

No disagreements there but the ability to get albums free streaming has done a number on the music industry in general. Yeah, a percentage of people purchase if they like the album but I know I'm guilty of downloading albums I absolutely loved and didn't pay for and would wager to say that's most people.

I don't think we're saying the only reason it failed is because it's marketing was poor. More saying the quality of the album had little to do with it failing. The band is so uncool and irreverent. They're one of those bands where it doesn't really matter what they put out, it'll get ignored. Putting out by the number shlock like Limitless....they took zero chances and went with a live your life song.

When was the last song that got any "real" attention? I'd wager Make a Memory. That's 14 years of failed attempts. The majority of us have our opinions but some of the albums were well received here, yet they all failed to the general public. You get what I'm saying here? Bon Jovi are pure nostalgia concerts and the second it's about the new stuff people don't seem to care but that doesn't mean the quality isn't there.

I don't know "real", but a local radio station which mostly plays "safe rock" (think Bon Jovi, AC/DC, the kinda stuff that wouldn't offend most people but still includes guitars) had No Apologies in heavy rotation. And not just around the time of the GH's release.

Interesting! Was it corporate owned or it's own thing?

I haven't worked in radio since 2012-ish, an AOR station. Memory got a LOT of play, Born to Follow got a bit, What do ya got, slightly less and that's been it as far as my area goes.

It's a private station, so uhm, I am not sure how these things work in the US. It is not owned by a label or anything like that, but it is not public owned or whatever.

The last songs played, as of now, are:
Quote:
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Hate Myself For Loving You
Bruce Springsteen - Glory Days
Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop
Eric Clapton - Lay Down Sally
Eagles - Hotel California
Van Halen - Runnin With The Devil
