Haha brilliant.

Only Lonely is absolutely an ulta-rare song even though it's a single. At those point 90% of the people are there for Slippery forward. It's not a song that the casuals are going to know. The 10% diehards will.

The rare songs lasted like 3 shows not because Jon got bored but because the audience did. I applaud them for throwing so many rarities into a tour but with the amount of album cuts that weren't hits, the songs from the first few records, Jon leaving the stage for Homebound Train (also an album cut that was on a huge album but isn't going to get as big a reaction especially with someone else singing) a These Days track PLUS all the new songs? That's our dream but piss break after piss break for the casuals. Had it been done a little better I could have seen it lasting longer in the tour.

EDIT: BUT I'm talking North America. Europe and Japan is the wild west and they can pull that off. Doing it in America is a bold choice.

@Captain_jovi
You're absolutely right with what you're saying.
But ironically Only Lonely (54) was a bigger "hit" in the US than I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (97), We Weren't Born To Follow (68 ) or Whole Lot Of Leavin', which wasn't even released as a single.
So once again it's all up to Jon. If he wouldn't have laid that song to rest for 20+ years, even the casuals would probably know it and thus wouldn't go for a piss break.

Thanks. Great site.
You know I’ve seen Jovi over 20 times and never seen Wild is the Wind. On the circle tour my mate got free tickets (his wife worked at the label at the time) and he gets wild is the wind!

Oh, that's bad luck. I've seen them about as often as you have and had Wild Is The Wind 3-4 times, and Living In Sin also 2-3 times, which is/was rare as hell, too.

I've seen plenty of people make this argument but it's absolute nonsense.

The rare songs were replaced by other stuff that same audience absolutely cared a lot less for. The rare songs were placed after Born To Be My Baby. What songs were then played there instead? Lost Highway, Whole Lot Of Leavin', When We Were Beautiful...

I've seen the band play those songs at nearly every show I visited in North America and never, ever were they met with great approval. Meanwhile, Raise Your Hands is always universally liked. Are you saying something like Get Ready couldn't get the same response would Jon actually bother to put in the effort he puts into trying to convince people Work for the Working Man is a great song?

The first 10 songs of a show have always been songs Jon can easily make it through. He doesn't have to think and can pretty much sleepwalk through the first hour. This changed with the addition of stuff he had to relearn how to sing and perform. Suddenly there were these new songs he played for everyone but him. And Jon Bon Jovi rarely plays songs for anyone but him, so they had to go.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Wasn't the consensus that the rare tracks were only performed so they had live stuff for the 2011 remasters of the first few albums? They might have just dropped the songs once they had a decent live take of these.

Right but the discussion isn't "What could Jon have done differently so people knew it when it came back" it's "how is the song being received in 2010".

Follow didn't do great and Leaving I'm fairly certain was a single in America which is where we're talking about. What it boils down to is....I'd wager more people know Follow (especially on the tour the album is supporting) and Leaving. While the new material didn't sell loads, more people at a 2010 show will have the previous two or three albums than the pre Slippery albums).

It's absolutely a piss break moment for a lot of people but the idea that people are going nuts for Only Lonely and Hardest Part Is The Night is a pipe dream at best. We would, sure.

I sort of agree but don't. Get Ready would do wonders for the band, I've always thought that one should be one of the second or tier songs that replaced a non-hit. But that's not really what my argument was. A song here or there has no problem, it's loading the setlist for that tour with THAT MANY unknown songs. Like, taking Seattle, second show of the tour:

Album cuts:
Blood on Blood
Roulette
Shot Through the Heart
Homebound Train
When We Were Beautiful
We Got It Goin' On

Singles but not hits:
We Weren't Born to Follow
Lost Highway
Something for the Pain
Someday I'll Be Saturday Night

Hits:
You Give Love a Bad Name
Born to Be My Baby
It's My Life
Bed of Roses
Bad Medicine
Who Says You Can't Go Home
Wanted Dead or Alive
Livin' on a Prayer

New Album Cuts:
Superman Tonight
Work for the Working Man
Love's the Only Rule
Thorn in My Side

Covers:
Hallelujah

That's 8 songs you can almost guarantee people will go nuts for out of 23. With a few less album cuts no one cares about to give the band a chance to work the songs from the 80s I think they could have done it but they pulled the plug way too early and it's disappointing.

All this chat re past concerts made me have a wee listen back to previous tours on youtube while cooking the dinner. Funny, last night, Manchester 2003 during the Bounce era. Not saying it was brilliant or pathetic etc (I was at the Hyde Park show a few days later) but I had never heard the Manchester gig before and it was great listening away, not knowing the set etc. Literally stopped cooking when the likes of Undivided, The Distance etc came on, just looking back at how they really rocked, Richie playing etc, great crowd noise is actually fun. I don't know if the person who keeps putting these shows on youtube is on here but it is a great job.

Then, i saw the Phil X fan club posted a 10 year thing about Phil being in BJ with various clips of him playing and singing and I had forgotten Jon had let him sing the likes of AC/DC etc down under during the tour, and it was brill, fresh, rocky, crowd loved it and it got me thinking, I'd much prefer to hear Phil do that a few times in a show to a rockier cover than listen to WLOL or WWBTF over an over again. If Jon wont play rarities any more, then let Phil and the band loose on a few covers!

That was my second ever BJ gig and first in golden circle. Great show, at the greatest stadium in the world. Hyde Park a few days later was even better.
