What Do You Got is not a good song for me, but production choices versus This Is Love, This is Life are night and day. It's still mushy on choruses largely cause instrumental arrangements are bland, but dynamics are much better still. If anybody else produced This Is Love, This Is Life, it could have been a serious contender for major Jovi single.

Again, this doesn't mean Shanks' choices are so horrific, they are in line with industry standards in those times, and I agree with you, if we are to play blame game, of course it ends with Jon's responsibility. But much of those songs just don't breathe. If you listen to LH songs that Shanks produced, try to listen them 5 times in a row and your ears will be so much tired than with other songs on the same album.

Its really not a rubish thing to say. We Got It Going On sounds big and open. You can hear the guitars and what's going on with all the instruments. The best way I can describe it is clear. That song ain't done by shanks.

What Do You Got, there isn't that wall of sound. The intro is soft and subtle sounding. Once again, in the chorus, you can pick out the lead slides that Richie plays, from the rhythm guitar playing the chords. If shanks mixed that, the guitar would be very flat sounding (eq wise). Have you been able to CLEARLY pick out Jon's Acoustic Guitar in any shanks song that isn't just acoustic/bass/drums?

Shanks just has a style. It's obviously worked for him, but it's boring. IMO, Dan Huff is far superior. Test it, find some good OVER-THE-EAR head phones, put on Lost Highway, and just listen, try to feel where the instruments are.

You can definitely tell, if you try to listen for it.

Shanks doesn't mix any of them though. He's the producer not a mixer. They are two very different jobs. The whole Lost Highway album was mixed by Jeremy Wheatley. So if you are hearing differences then it is something to do with the way it was recorded, not the mix. I believe Jon actually didn't approve the first mix, and then sent it to Jeremy to remix. Maybe he was having trouble getting it to sound cohesive with the 2 different production styles. I wonder who did the first mix? Have A Nice Day had a few different mixers.

What about 2020? That album has a good production, there are space and each instrument shines. Just listen to Luv Can intro, you can hear everything clearly

I agree, I think this is Shanks' best sounding record with Bon Jovi, it's just a shame that Jon's voice was in such bad shape. No sure who mixed this one?

Edit: This guy apparently. https://www.mbrauer.com/
Also did This House.

According to Discogs: Michael H. mixed Bon Jovi's 2020 album.
