I agree. The album could have been named
Santa Claus and some would see it as Jon digging at Richie. If he chose the title, and did so with Richie in mind, I think it was probably more because he knew this first release was gonna cause a sh!tstorm any way you look at it and decided to head-butt it.
While I can't honestly say I think he's above making digs on occasion, I do think he's smart enough that he wouldn't risk alienating any portion of his fan base by doing something that obvious.
And aside from that, I don't hear anger in the lyrics.
"Take me to the banks of your muddy water
Where the flesh and blood and the spirit meet
Only takes your touch for me to find salvation
You’re the only reason that I still believe.
(I’m) not afraid of burning bridges, cause I know they’re gonna light my way
I can't find anger in that. And the rest of the song is the same raise your hands, get up off your knees, never give up, never give in song and dance they've done since SWW.
(Sorry, I got my threads mixed up. Those lyrics are obviously from We Don't Run; but SNGMSM lyrics don't sound angry to me, either.

Perception is reality. It all depends on what you want to see, or what you expect to see, when you look at the picture.
