Yep. Amazing how one line can kill a song.

I love the chorus personally.

We were out in the car last night so I stuck the album on. We got to MFG and my 16 year old daughter who had been saying she was enjoying the album said... "well this sucks. It's horrible - put living Proof back on instead!"

At that moment I had to agree. I hated it yesterday. It realky got my back up.

My daughter, like me and my dad (who also has the album) just cannot get our heads round the "I'm in love with my first guitar" line.
Completely ruins it for us

That's the only part I hate. More so when he first says it.

To be fair, my Mrs on the first listen of MFG said 'oo I don't like this one' but likes it now.

The last two minutes are excellent.

I don't understand the grief about Jon being in love with his first guitar. Why is that any worse that writing about seeds/weeds/waves/walls/house etc.?

I think it just comes across as much more twee than it probably feels to him? It sounds earnest, and I am too English to find other people’s earnestness comfortable to witness

Also, for me, it’s the singalong factor - it’s crystal clear in the mix and absolutely something that I will feel a twit singing. It’s so very clearly someone else’s experience that doesn’t translate at all to mine in the way that other sentiments can.

I also, fwiw, can’t connect with KTB, even though objectively I quite like it - just can’t hook into the sentiment, in the absence of kids or having been a bride-with-adoring-dad myself.

My First Guitar is my first choice for skipping. Right from the beginning I couldn't get into it. I just find it incredibly ridiculous. And it always makes me think of Queen's I'm In Love With My Car.

But besides that I was surprised very positively by that album. Some nice songs, catchy melodies. Nothing ground-breaking but a solid album which makes a good listen. Favourites so far are Living Proof, Waves, The People's House and Walls of Jericho.
The intro of Waves is masterclass. When I first listened to it (I didn't listen to the snippets before) during the intro I expected a Scorpions-like rocker and was disappointed when it only led to Jon singing over some acoustic strumming. But the rest of the songs develops nicely.

I think you need to persevere with MFG. The second half of it is a really good jamming song.

I like My First Guitar. Yeah it seems cheesy maybe I'm seeing it differently because I'm a guitarist and I have my first guitar displayed on a wall. Not in love with it though, it's cheap and terrible and doesn't play anymore.

And now that you mention Queen - a band I feel had many cheesy and silly songs - I don't thing My First Guitar is any sillier or worse than I Want to Ride my Bicycle.

We were talking about This Was Then, This is Now here a few days ago and it magically appeared on my YouTube recommendations yesterday. Would it be far-fetched to think they're listening to us?

Anyway, it's another good song that I'd rather have on the record than KTB or Walls of Jericho. But I get it, KTB is only on there because Jon wrote it for his daughter.

That's not the reason, I'm a guitarist, too, and still own (and cherishing) the first one as well without playing it anymore.
But it's absolutely fine that you like the song. I don't want to convince anybody, it's simply a matter of taste

I agree with you. And I find I'm In Love With My Car ridiculous as well.
But it's not about which band has more songs that are silly or not. Their Car-song just came to my mind because I find both equally ridiculous and at least that very sentence I Love My First Guitar and I'm In Love With My Car is sung with the same melody.
