I think Jon tries to create a balance between the two in order to keep it real but also to perform the songs live.

He knows his fans know his vocal limitations so if he cranks out an album sounding like he's 25, it could have significant consequences.

At this point I'd like to see him go for it because there are no more live performances. A simple song like Limitless is just as painful to listen to as Always.
.
I don't know if you're implying he isnt currently using vocal technology or not but boy how golly is he. Compare the vocal tracks on any song on 2020 with how it sounds live. Personally I think it's dangerous enough to give the impression it's manageable live because of the then go out on tour, full well showing how processed and manipulated the vocal tracks are. Imagine if he recorded an album sounding like he was energetic and 25 and then toured behind it? Dude would last three songs, tops.

I guess that's my point. The songs on the past few albums have suffered due to the fact that Jon wants to attempt to perform them live. If he wrote an entire album full of Blood In The Waters, he would never be able to perform it but now that his live voice is gone, he should just go for it.

And yes, I know he's been using vocal technology for the past 20 years but 2020 was recorded 4 years ago and the vocal technology has advanced even further since.

I suppose it comes down to whether the songs are good enough to begin with. Would 90s Jon turn the last three albums into classics or very good, or are the songs just not there?

It's not a popular opinion around here but In These Arms, lyrically, is not a good song. There are a lot of band songs that are pretty meh when you break them down, but the energy and passion put into them do a lot of heavy lifting.

There are a handful of songs on 2020 that would have been right at home on KTF. Brothers in Arms, if done in the 90's would have been wonderful. But a lot of stinkers have made it to the final albums too and no polishing in the world could fix turds.

True enough. I don't think we're questioning if the technology is there to improve Jon. Of course it is. But why in the world would he stick to the studio, where they lose money, versus playing live, where they make money? I think the creative in Jon is long gone. He may love writing, but he's realistic enough to know the fanbase ain't in it for the albums at this point, right?

100%, there are loads of songs with awful lyrics, many on Slippery and New Jersey. I think it is as much as the delivery, production, dynamism, passion, etc that has held back the modern era of Bon Jovi, not what is written on the paper.

I've been saying for years that lyrics don't mean anything unless it's a lyrically driven song like We Didn't Start The Fire.

If lyrics drove a song, then every cover song would be equal to the original. We've all seen American Idol or The Voice and witnessed butchered covers.

at this stage i think the band/jon are out of good songs.

if they did manage to cobble together 10 decent rock tracks im all for using software to get Jons early year rasp back. As for live, dont tour unless you have Richie back to help with vocals.

there are no rules saying you have tour, at this stage of their career touring isnt going to boost sales as everyone wants the classics.

If everyone wants the classics, why would they buy a new album? Logically it's a lot of time and work and money to put an album together no one is going to buy. Fixing the tech and making Jon sound young isn't going to make the band cool again and spike sales massively.

I personally think they play it too safe on what songs make the album. BB proved they have some odd, darker songs in them they just don't want people to hear that side of them and repeat These Days in North America, it's not what they're known for here.

They would make me very happy if they did a new album and it sounded like Burning Bridges or These Days - or even a combination of both. I, personally, have had enough "Live my life" messages.
