So I am sure he has a lot of stories to tell us, that he would like to simply release from his chest, through both lyrics and music of the songs.
2. A chance to step out of Jon’s shadow – we all know what a great musician he is, but in BJ he is always on that No.2 spot. The final word always goes to Jon. For the fist time in almost 15 years he could finally be totally creative, the way he wants it, and shine individually and take all the spotlight for himself for a moment. That might give him more confidence for future band works too.
3. Good music shape – those who have seen him live after rehab in the summer in Europe know what I am talking about. You could say he shared the stage with Jon, on equal terms, sometimes even overshadowed Jon. He was on fire and you could really see the hunger to play and love for music in his eyes. If you do something from the heart it has to be good, and when you’re healthy and well prepared for it the final result will also be really strong .
4. New team – after this recent news it seems he has gathered a bunch of new people around him, which is really good. Fresh blood, fresh ideas, musical brain storm that might give us something totally unexpected. But still Richie will be the leader of this team, no matter what. With each BJ album we know we will get al least one IML clone, now we just don’t know where it will flow. Surprise factor - for the fans and for Richie himself too.
5. Good timing in BJ land to make solo records for both Richie and Jon – this situation reminds me more of 90-91' than 98', from their previous solo albums. They worked really hard in 2000’ on so many tours, just like they did on SWW and NJ tours. They need to take that short break from eachother, just to rediscover artists in them individually. 1 year should be enough. I hope the new band album will show up late in 2012, but in the meantime both leaders will have a chance to shine individually which would only make them stronger for the bands sake.

Very well said. And I'll say again, I hope I am wrong. I hope I LOVE it! I hope he surpasses the bar set by his last 2 solo albums. But to better explain why my expectations are low I will comment on your points:
1) You are right, out of pain comes masterpieces. But drug and alcohol abuse is kind of a different animal for some. I have heard different addicts contradict what others believe. But Stephen King believes his material in the early 80s (his most popular work) would have been better if he hadn't drank and drugged... so that is a good sign. But for some artists it is their creative fuel . Time will tell with Richie whether it makes a difference at all.
2) Richie has seemed very content in Jon's shadow for the last 20 years. He deserves more spotlight IMO but hasn't really cared to take it, or at least how it seems to me.
3) From what I have seen on youtube, Richie did seem to be enjoying himself post rehab and seemed to do very well. Good point, and you are right. But playing the same songs he has played 1000s of times is different than producing new material. But again, it is a good sign.
4) You have a point here too. New team = good thing.
5) It is a good time to make a record. They are probably itching to try different things. Again, good point.
The main reason my expectations are low:
1) Richie's vocals, like Jon's are nowhere close to where they use to be. I use to love Richie's voice but the little of what I have heard lately doesn't excite me.
2) AND my biggest concern, the new material on their last 3 releases (LH, TC, and GH) have led me to believe that Richie is uninspired. Maybe it is just within the walls of BJ? Maybe it is in general? Is it BJ conforming to modern pop (cutting solos and guitar heavy songs)? Or does Richie just not put out the effort? When was the last time we have had a great guitar riff? There was some good stuff on HAND, I suppose. But Crush was last time I was really impressed, with solo at the end of Next 100 Years. In the studio, we have seen very little of what made him so special in the 90s.
