This. And my intuition is that fans generally know much more in detail about band's general history and facts than band members themselves. They either don't remember correctly or don't really care about being too correct about exact timings, while fans get their kick by knowing that stuff in a detailed way.

Bingo bango, yup. We know this stuff because we listen to it and talk about it. The band doesn't live with the albums anywhere close to where we do.

I just watched Chris Shiflett from Foo Fighters debating if a song was a single in 2011. It just happens.
