I do. I think it'd be way off base for Jon to decide which person does the solo. Phil and Shanks constantly record for the band when Jon isn't even present. I think we can drop the "Shanks is a hired gun" by this point, eh?

I think you know it was a tongue-in-cheek kind of comment

But by saying that I have no idea at all how much Jon "dictates" who has to do what or not. I can't even take a guess since I can imagine both - being the complete control freak or giving the band their space within certain boundaries.

Haha, off my game today. Yeah it's tough to say, PERSONALLY I think he gives Shanks some tasks to do (Record some backing vocals, record guitars with Phil), "come back to me and I'll approve it". There's too much video footage backing this up and Phil's story about the Beautiful Drug solo. The days are gone where Jon is there making sure it happens the way he wants all the time and that's....baffling to see.

Shanks is BOTH the evil mastermind overtaking BJ the band and telling JBJ what he has to do AND the powerless guitar player who must do exactly as master JBJ tells him.

You can try to but people will always hear the difference.

Shanks did a surprisingly good job on 2020. His guitar work fits the songs very well. That it can't be compared to Richie's guitar work from the past should be clear.
Totally agree with the first part...and that is the problem: you didn’t mention John Shanks, because he has no style and he isn’t fit to be a lead guitarist.

He knows music production and has a good ear for easy going ‘pop-rock junk’ as Jon once said. 2020 guitaring? There’s nothing special; Phil’s solo is interesting but repetitive already (remember his ‘Samboring’ comments?); Shanks is mehh (have to skip the CCR rip-off every time due to that wasted solo).

It also makes you think how and who exactly got Richie playing Noel Gallagher complexity solos from 2000 onwards; probably Jon’s idea then backed up by John when he came into the band.

20 years wasted of one of the world’s most talented guitarists: Stevie was always Stevie; Van Halen, Gary, Brian and loads more. Richie was wasted (no pun intended) after These Days. He is far superior technically and feeling wise than Slash let’s say, but hasn’t written a few decent songs since Aftermath and a decent album since Undiscovered Soul... such a waste.

Ok, rant over 😹

I get it but you're saying Jon held Richie back from playing the way should and also Richie hasn't released a good album since US? How is it both? I've never gotten the mentality that the world needs Richie in the band so they can soar but also mostly ignore his solo outputs. It may be a case of they're better together than apart?
