Remastering is basically a process that normalises the track and brings any random peaks in the waveform to a similar level as the rest of the track. This is so the gain can be boosted and thus the overall volume of the track without (in theory) reducing quality. If these tracks have already been remastered digitally, as they have with the remasters that were released just before the turn of the century, then to make it louder still you would have to sacrifice a bit of quality and make certain louder parts of the track quieter or even inaudible.

The best way of checking this would be to open the track in a piece of recording software such as Audacity. If the waveform appears to be solid in some or all areas rather than having peaks and troughs then there's a good chance the gain has been over-boosted. It's shit when they do that. I can see why they do it so the songs sound louder and stand out on radio, etc, but the extent to which it is done these days is ruining music as we know it.
Thanks for writing this down, Rob.
I just compared Born to be my baby from the 1988 japanese Edition and from the new 2010 Tour Edition the way you described it and I was shocked (See the attachments).

Nevertheless, when I'm listening to the new version I think I still can hear all the details, maybe even better, cause it sounds way cleaner. Ain't that paradox then somehow, cause the audacity analysis shows me a counterpart to what I hear.

Crush brought them a new fan base, and therefore made their music cross grenerations

KTF - Bed of roses, Dry County, ITA etc...... plus it was a great comback album with some of jons best vocals.

I think most of the albums are iconic to some extent. SWW catapulted them to stardom, NJ kept them there. KTF was the return after the exhausting NJ tour. TD is simply an astonishing album. Crush was the big next-gen pop comeback. Bounce was admittedly a bit of a fail, HAND was a return to form again and led to the LH experiment because of WSYCGH. Now we have the Circle, a solid addition to the BJ catalogue.

I won't list the corkers on "Crush" as there are too many to mention . Without IML it would have bombed and only because of that song it "crossed generations". Thanks o Max Martin. All the huge hits were co-written. I reckon D. Child as 6th member of the band. He has more input than hired gun Huey.
Does't 'corker' mean good or decent? Not bad.

I've seen you do that a few times and not sure of what it is. What is it?

Words for bad:

Poor
Terrible
Disastrous
Shocking
Awful
Disappointing

There's four albums I'd recommend to anyone, irrespective of whether they are a Bon Jovi fan or not. SWW, NJ, KTF and TD. From Slippery through to These Days there were nothing out there to touch Bon Jovi in my opinion. It was a golden decade for the band and they've struggled to live up to it ever since.

Ahh sorry i wasnt clear, i mean if any of the Special Editions are worth it, I have all the regular albums, but only the New Jersey Special Edition. Is the Keep The Faith Special Edition worth buying, or is it worse than the original recording?

Even on bad days they were miles better than on a good day in the last few years sadly. The energy and passion (what was THE strength of BJ) has almost completely vanished.
KTF is the best album Bon Jovi have done. I think it incorporates the best of each band member and the songs are just fantastic. You only have to look at the KTF demos and b-sides just to see how strong an album it was. There isn't a weak track on it.

Sorry I haven't got any of the special editions as of yet because I believe them to be a waste of money. If you have the remastered KTF then I'd guess it isn't worth buying just for a couple of live tracks.

Nah gotta disagree with ya buddy. I'll give you Woman in Love but there's no way the other songs you mentioned are weak. They kick the livin' shit out of the post 2000 output, and stand up to the majority of the other material of that era. Bed of Roses is perhaps Bon Jovi's best ballad. Little Bit of Soul and Save a Prayer are fantastic chill out songs with great lyrics. BIOTLORnR is a good rocker and I Want You is another good ballad.
