athletes sure decline, guitarists usually get better ...maybe i m too harsh with the guy but its too strange to me to see a guy like richie getting worse as years go by even if he continues to play music..
ps.i dont think richie showcased his guitar talent completely which is a shame in many ways...bon jovi's structure, jons & richie's songdriven thinking, and they non existing jams made it impossimple for richie to be in an environment where he could reach his full potentials, not as a shredder but as blues-rock player with more creative/performing freedom...

Nah, not really. A lot of guitarists get worse once they're past their fifties. They're no longer as fast as they used to be, much like an athlete indeed.

The reason however why SuperBrad's comparison to an athlete falls flat is because an athlete doesn't start tripping over his feet every time he needs to do a lap. And that's what Richie's doing nowadays, he just can't finish a song anymore without tripping at least once, and that's when you've lost it as a guitarist. A musician on his level, or in fact any musician ought to be able to finish a song without ****ing up. And Richie can't, which is why he's lost it.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Completely agree. It's too late to see its full potential in a great album or live show, it could have happened before of The HAND Tour ... but after, the man was touched is psychologically, and I think the damage is irreversible and increasingly will get worse. I have only the hope that at least Richie, some way to recover as 2012, it was not exceptional but was acceptable and (enought) decent to enjoy the last few years of my guitar hero.

i https://youtu.be/1ZTep9M1mAU i keep going back to this little clip among others...for me performances like that showcased richies talents...fluent effortless melodic without exaggerations, beautiful playing singing charisma...i saw some small glimpses from that when he played with tommy emmanuel and the other guy..
speed is logiacal to decline but should affect extra fast and technical players, richie doesnt play slow, ****s up the same licks..

I just want more of this. This level is quite respectable.

Don't agree with this (at least I think I don't), who are some of the guitarists you think got worse?

Joe Perry from Aerosmith has gotten a lot worse the last decade, he strays away from a lot of signature guitar solo's and does random fills and licks. He used to be a lot more focussed.

Eric Clapton isn't as good as he used to be either. He's turned 70 now but admitted about 10 years ago how he just doesn't understand how he was capable of things 15 years ago, and realizes his fingers just aren't as fast anymore.

Keith Richards is a mess nowadays, was sloppy but had feeling. Now all he does is look cool and play the odd chord or riff. Rumours are going he barely touches the guitar when he's not touring.

Just to name a few.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Oh yeah, I will give you them, but they are all much older than Richie. The nearest is Joe Perry in his mid-sixties, ten years on Sambora. I am not huge fans of any of those artists or bands, but I am willing to suggest they were in good shape guitar wise when they were 55, am I right or wrong?

What about John Norum? It's a genuine question, I don't know his work, just his name and "The Final Countdown" but I guess he's about the same age as Richie.
