Surely someone in that studio must have had listened and had the idea to come forward and say this is bloody crap. I'm no musician by any stretch (at least not anymore) but I've made better tracks on pro-tools in 5 minutes.
I haven't heard the longer itunes version, but it does appear that's not the greatest production on the record. Thankfully, pretty much all the other's sound fine. In fact, Come On Up To Our House sounds pretty damn good and is better than the live version.

That's reassuring to hear but why let the standards slip?

Rollercoaster could have been fantastic.

To be fair, anyone with the slightest understanding of music production knows that the production on a song like Born Again Tomorrow is well below acceptable. The vocals are almost piercing at times, the overabundance of compression is insane, and because of that you damage what would be a great sounding track in the end. Whenever a song sounds this much better live than in studio, it becomes clear that whoever mixed and mastered it had way too much time to work on it. Some people may not agree but the fact is production value DOES matter. It can make or break a song, as well as an album.

I still don't get the thinking behind the chorus to Roller Coaster. Is Shanks to blame? Is it Jon? It sounds unfinished - like that was the first vocal take but it's been messed with loads in production. Baffled in all honesty.

It's almost unlistenable in the sense of we heard the much better live version, know the potential of the song but then hear this offering.

Anyone out there actually like it??

I was refering more to the fact they had captured that EDM sound on Born Again Tomorrow.

I don't claim to know anything about music production, but Rollercoaster plain stinks.

I'm not entirely sure why it's such an issue that this particular song has crushed a little of the excitement of the album for me. I can accept bad songs, nearly every album has them. The thing is this isn't a bad song, it's just so poorly executed that even I can tell it's been ruined.

Meh, production, mixing and the mastering of the tracks all sound great to me. Compression is just a given these days as the loudness wars is as prevalent as its ever been. They just made some different stylistic choices than most of us would have liked. Rollercoaster could have used louder backing vocals as that gives it an added oomph live, BAT I don't get the hate over its production, it's perfectly in tune with the sound they were going for, I prefer the live version because the guitars are louder but that's just preference and not lacking in production or mixing quality.....

It's harder to swallow when the teaser of a live version builds expectations. Perhaps had we not heard it live, we'd still be critical of the vocal but not focus too much on the song as we'd have no reference of how good it was and how good it should have been in the studio.

You're ready to throw out an entire album on the basis of a sample clip of one song. I don't care if you dislike Rollercoaster. It's a valid opinion. Being the basis for writing off an entire album is irrational.

The "loudness wars" haven't been a factor in the music industry for several years now. You'll find very few albums that are brick-walled beyond belief like albums like Death Magnetic were. If you're fine with the production then that's fine. At the end of the day as long as it is a pleasant listening experience for you that's what matters. However for me, and what will be for many other people, the level of compression is way beyond the norm, even for this day and age. It's just not pleasant to listen to. A song like Come on Up to Our House actually sounds authentic and natural, I would say almost to the extent that it reminds me of something that could have been on These Days, especially the way Jon's vocals are.
