You know what I just figured? Jon, the guys and the record company did a clever job of promoting this thing.
By doing those 4 shows and telling us the stories behind the songs, we're kind of more emotionally invested in and connected to it than we would be otherwise, because we know how much the songs mean to Jon. Also with the music videos: I remember some people only beginning to like THINFS the song (more) after seeing the music video. So painting these pictures and telling those stories certainly helped to make use like the new album (more).
Don't get me wrong, I genuinely think it's a great album, but some songs are typical Jovi songs, not totally by the numbers, but with a twist or modern element here and there (with the exception of Devil of course). It's the lyrics that really standout on some of those, the music not so much. Very good, but nothing groundbreaking (which ironically is one of the things I really like about the band, so nothing wrong here for me
) And while the production/mixing is better than WAN, it still sucks in some places.
Anyway, just my thoughts in the morning, drinking my coffee. Hope it make some kind of sense to anyone
