On the contrary, I think it’s a very good idea to collaborate.
Some of the greatest Bon Jovi songs are, of course, written solely by Jon. I understand that getting a number one single in the US with BOG was important for him back then, proving everyone he could do it without an outside writer.
Yet I think the songwriting team of JB/RS/DC was out of this world in the 80’s and 90’s. Desmond brought in what was needed to make great become epic.
In my eyes, collaborating with outside songwriters never makes an artist less respectable or less convincing. It’s not a sign of weakness nor does it mean you’re not good enough on your own.
Max Martin did a great job with IML. Collaborating with him introduced Bon Jovi to a new generation of fans and greatly helped the band stay relevant in the 2000’s.
Some of the best post 2000 songs have been written with BF. And I know some on this board can’t stand John Shanks but honestly, I really appreciate his songwriting skills as well.
The list of new cowriters on Forever looks very convincing to me. And I am very eager to hear what happens when you combine Jon’s and Ed Sheeran’s songwriting skills.
