But was he? Anything I've seen from him was truly miserable. I'm not trying to pick a fight here, glad to be proven wrong in fact. But he preached "joy", however he was completely detached. Perhaps even clinically.

For me, it was disturbing to see in numerous interviews. Some, he couldn't even fake it. Others, he did fake it, such as that famous late night show (was it Colbert?). But even more worrying perhaps was documentary inserts that were more recent and afterwards obvious lying (to himself) about his vocal recovery later.

My opinion is that non-fans see it better, cause we're now a bit accustomed to his ways. But he is a miserable sack for 10 years straight now, 11 in fact, and first time I seriously worry for the guy. He does most of the day his vocal training and he sings as a strained cat for several years already. I think he doesn't need more vocal training, but overall rest. Just let it be, whatever it is.

Now, first time perhaps ever, he is for sure a nostalgia act, non-relevant, and non-successful (and not capable to tour). He needs to back off and embrace nostalgia wholy. There are signs he does/did, but I still worry. Cause he is too young/successful/accomplished to be devoid of joy. Hopefully he finds it truly and in other ways, cause band success and global tours are now thing of the past I presume

You can have the joy of releasing work you find artistically satisfying while also grappling with the fact that your shortcomings will prevent you from singing again.

I honestly think a lot of this is in your head. He was looser than ever in a lot of the interviews promoting the album and the grey cloud is not knowing if he can ever promote the album more than he did 2020.

How would he embrace nostalgia, by releasing curated deluxe editions of old albums? He is still a workaholic.

I am not a doctor, but I would assume the rest would have paid off better in 2012 than today. Both for his voice and for the state of his band. Now, maybe his exercises actually do help, maybe they don't. His voice is still in no shape for a tour, though.

If I were the guy, I would focus on a "I'll give them "washed up"" record, pulling all the punches. But Jon does not enjoy overtly laborious studio sessions, and neither does Shanks. I don't see him doing an "American Recordings as produced by Mutt Lange" stunt, taking forever to record an "well he _is_ old now" behemoth of a record, suited to his voice and perfectly crafted.

Nostalgia in a sense that not having No. 1 albums and not being able to compete with Taylor Swift should not be hard on him and he shouldn't feel bad about it. He is a legendary rock icon, embrace it, enjoy your sunset years with no pressure. Cause he always says we got nothing left to prove, but for 20 years he's doing everything the opposite. Now he should really listen to himself, nothing to prove and joy, but really, without faking it for the act.

Regarding vocal training, in the past I admit I had doubts how hard working was Jon with his voice and vocal training. But, after the documentary, I withdraw any sign of criticism in that regard. However, I do not believe it is healthy for him. Imagine a guy with 40+ success and half a billion dollars net worth spending most of his days alone, trying to sing, failing to sing, and do it again and again. He needs to back off a bit if he didn't already in this post-album hiatus. It doesn't mean he quits, but it's not healthy at this stage.

I don't think he was "faking" when saying he was in a moment of joy. He very probably didn't mean finding the press grind joyful. Although, I agree with others that he was the most open he has ever been. He embraced online marketing like he never has before.

He can also be happy in his personal life and found joy in making the record. It is possible him realizing his voice would not get better set him back professionally. I don't think he was lying about his voice, but rather being too optimistic about its state. Retreating to his happy personal life probably makes sense. I hope he stays there and retires.

And then on top of that, he lost his mother. Some posters saying the promo ended before her death. I am not sure the circumstances but I doubt she randomly dropped dead. She was probably ailing in the months leading to her passing, so Jon ending promo early could be because of that.
