Well I sure wouldn't just walk by and do nothing. If some guys were just mixing it up I might just call the cops if I was alone (I'm a very small woman - mean but small ). If guys were beating on another guy or raping a woman I would first call for help and then help as much as I could by involving other folks, screaming and calling attention to what was going on and as a last resort getting involved myself physically; Especially if another woman was involved and really needed the help. As a sidenote, I did this once in college at UC Berkeley. The rape rate in the seventies was 6 time the national average on campus - and the University did nothing about it. As a matter of fact - they refused to let women take self defense classes using the excuse that they were given in the mens PE department. A massive demonstration by campus women and a few rocks hurled through office windows convinced them to open the classes to us. I helped organize groups of women to be able to walk together at night to the library and late classes. One night some women near us were attacked and a bunch of us furious females chased the guys away. It was a very good feeling.

Default the official police line?

as a policeman Jim, i can give you the official advice. Always call the police and do not get involved yourself. you might think that a gang of you and your inebriated friends might well outnumber a copule of guys beating up on someone. However, if one of your friends gets punched in the face or something worse, the liklyhood is that another of your friends starts beating the guy senseless and kills him by accident. In scots law this would make you an accessory to the fact. Even if the other bloke was badly wounded, you would still be liable to various charges- aiding and abetting, (because you failed to report the crime to the police, ) incitement to commit violence etc.
At the end of the day, if you fear that violence may be caused by a third party do not get involved. It is the reason why so many young guys get killed or stabbed in Glasgow. They start out with good intentions, but asking a ned to stop thumping someone who in all probability is his best mate or brother will lead to you getting a good kicking yourself.
It is all about Psychology. personally I would tell you not to get involved. If you are brave enough to do so, remember you wil get called up as a witness in any future trial, which means the defence know who you are and where you live.
And we are not bothered who starts a fight. it is who we catch in the act who is charged.

hmmmmmmm i got tons of respect you mate but im gona bash the police abit, erm my dad ownd a resturant in my town till a few years back and he new every officer going, they were constantly standing in the kitchen every night drinking coffee while my dad was cooking, they were all chatting away, PCs, DIs, ANYWAY, as people they are lovely and fun to be around, as officers they were the lazyest ****s going! its a small town and the police station is only part time , a bank got robbed here 3 years ago and the guy escapedon a push bike police can be pretty usless at getting anywhere on time

now im guessing in a huge town, (i.e glasgow) alot more police on the beat, especially night times, kicking out times in the pubs/clubs but sometimes calling the police isnt an option

on the other side of this though i know police deal with alot, i know the force is limeted in what they do and how much they can do/provide but on the spur of the moment thing its not always the option.
