I reckon that this is how it works (in England anyway):
Children grow up surrounded by American movies. They see them so often that naturally they want to visit the place. They want to see cities with scores of skyscrapers (the UK has no city like this, not even London), they want to see the Grand Canyon, the want to go to Las Vegas, San Fancisco and Hollywood. In short, they want to see all of the places that have been glorified in all of the movies that they seen. They don't want to go to visit the people; the English are born with the knowledge that Americans are tw@ts.
It isn't until they go there that they realise that it is just a land of stupid people, bland buildings and car parks.
This is based on my experience, and the experience of others whom I have spoken to.
