Did you happen to watch the tape? Naughty doesn't exactly describe what she was doing. She was attacking the principal by kicking and hitting her along with trashing her office!! That is beyond naughty if you ask me. Now her parents are going to sue. Obviously the girl is emotionally disturbed or just lacking discipline. They should seek professional help for her instead of worrying about cashing in.
If a school can't control a 5 year old child then how they gonna control thousand others?
I totally agree with you here ... come on a 5 years old little girl even heavily disturbed should be controled by the shcool not by the police

if they were to have used force against the little 5 year old girl then the parent's would have sued and inevitably won.
I think the school did the right thing, now probably a therapist is helping the little girl and talking to her parents about how to make things better for the girl.
Yes a school should be able to control a 5 year old girl but what could they do in this case??? ground her, hit her, take away her lunch??

I agree, but it doesn't change the fact that it happens, and instead of it being thought of as the last result for a problem, it's the first thing that comes to mind for most people, specially upper middle class americans.
It's a twisted and sick world we're living in surrounded by chaos and sin.(thats my lyric)

yeah i watched the tape.
all i saw was a little girl who had a problem. i'm not the one to say whether this problem was lack of discipline or emotional disturbance. all i know is that this wasn't a police matter let alone handcuffing her like a criminal. i thought schools had other people to deal with these problems. teachers are supposed to be pedagogues.
professional help for the child yes but suing will help to avoid similar acts by the police and the schools in the future.

ps. "trashing her office" is a bit exaggerated. i'll watch out for five year olds from now on i think. :P

When a kid is totally out of control and not listening to reason, sometimes it is hard to know exactly what to do. The principal sat back helplessly while this child was running around the office, ripping things off of the walls and kicking and hitting her. Maybe handcuffing her was a bit extreme, but you have to realize that the adult in this situation can't even put their hands on the kid to restrain him/her. What would you have done? Please tell me how you would have handled the situation? Calling the cops was probably the most logical option so as not to risk getting sued herself. The cops can't put their hands on her either, so maybe in their head this was the most logical way of staying out of trouble.

Not that I totally agree with that method mind you, but I wasn't there so it is hard to judge just by watching a tape. Plus, nobody knows what kind of violent history this kid has that led up to this.

Don't laugh at the fact that she was only five. When you have one running rampant and out of control around you, then we shall see who has the last laugh. :P

i don't know how i would handle the kid maybe i knew better if i were a turor. but i wouldn't call the police to treat her that way. also the police shouldn't have handcuffed her. she's a baby! she's not 15 or 16...

Also, what baffles me is the fact that you are more outraged by this kid being handcuffed rather than her behavior. Since when is kicking and hitting teachers acceptable? It is quite scary if you ask me. Especially being a teacher myself.

Nothing prepares you for situations like this. Especially in a society where you have to worry about every move you make, because it will lead to you being sued.

She wasn't really acting like your typical 5 year old was she?
