There is no such thing as a 'killer dog breed' --- pit bulls and rottweilers, if raised and treated appropriately, are some of the kindest most people loving breed.

True, dog aggression has been bred into pit bulls as they've been commonly used as fighting dogs.

However, dog aggression and people aggression is COMPLETELY different. Tons of dogs are dog aggressive, though would NEVER hurt a human. I have a dog aggressive dog and she is the most reliable around children and people - she just doesn't like other dogs (except her 'brother' lol).

Please don't stereotype the breed and please don't bash the breed for what the human turned the dog into.

Russ, please do some research before asking for a ban on breeding a certain type of dog.

Unfortunately, there are people aggressive dogs out there but it is the responsibility of the dog owner to keep their dog safe - ie. other people safe from their dog.

In fact, in the US - there are more reported dog bites from labradors and shepherds than rottweilers and pit bulls.

I have a human aggressive dog - it isn't the way he was treated, but he is just plain 'insane' --- I take my responsibility for others safety extremely serious and would NEVER let him run free (which I wouldn't in any situation - aggressive or not).

Anyway, this is a big pet peeve of mine and I've worked with dogs for many years - various breeds and just cannot stand those stereotypes.

I love pit bulls and would adopt one in a heartbeat if I wasn't worried about the dog aggression issue as I am and will always be a multiple dog household. They are wonderful wonderful dogs if raised appropriately.

I'm with Becky. I think there should be way more weight placed on the owner/handler than on the breed.

I'm not sure where I heard this, or if its true, but AFAIK, comparing bite/death records, Pomeranians are the deadliest dogs.

I firmly believe that the way you raise a dog makes a huge difference in their behavior. Yes, some dogs are bred to fight, but I don't think that automatically makes them bad dogs. My mom is a veterinary technician. She used to bring home all sorts of misfits from work (she still does, actually. LOL), so I grew up with dogs and we had many breeds. I've had german shephards, rottweilers and doberman pinschers that were all sweet, loving dogs. My neighbor has a chihuahua that will bite you if you get too close to it though. They used to have a black lab that was the same way. My other neighbor has a pit bull that is a big baby. The environment a dog is raised in makes a huge difference.

The province of Ontario is planning on banned pitbulls. In some parts of the province, they are already out-lawed. People who have pitbulls are allowed to keep the dogs, but must muzzle them in public places. Since the proposed law was announced, the Toronto Humane Society has been overwhelmed with pitbulls and if they can't find homes, the dogs will be put down.

I firmly believe that there should be more emphasis placed on owners of pitbulls. Environment plays a huge role behaviour.

Pitbulls are banned here, or at least banned in the sense that the breed will die out naturally in a few years. Every Pitbull must be registered and they are all sterilised or castrated, no new dogs are allowed in. I personally don't like Pitbulls simply becasue they are breed to be aggressive, however I do agree with Becky to a certain extent and environement and how they are handled has a lot to do with it.
