Ckicken Fried steak is a staple in the diet of most Southerners, it's also very popular in the Southwest, the Dakotas, montana and Wyoming. Made properly with a good batter and the right gravy it's actually very good. I-HOP is a crap chain for anything except breakfast food. I can't believe anyone let you buy fried chicken from Walmart. ICK!! Someone should have explained better about picking places to eat to you.

a battered steak must taste somethign like a harder deep fried burger you can get in chippies up here. which isn't exactly somethign i'd make a habit of trying

It's kinda hard to describe. LOL If made properly it's not hard. If you get a nice thick peice of say Sirloin steak, batter it up in a beer batter, deep fry it and once it is finished you smother it in a sausage gravy, with mashed potatos and some veggies. it's really good. But Like I said, you gotta make it a certain way otherwise it is horrible.
