The Democrats have pulled off an historic win to seize control of the US House of Representatives in a crushing defeat for President George Bush.

The White House admitted the mid-term elections had "not gone the way he would have liked" as Republicans faced up to losing the House for the first time since 1994.

Democrat Nancy Pelosi, who is poised to become the first female Speaker, told ecstatic supporters her party was "ready to lead".

By Wednesday morning they had snatched more than 20 House seats from Republican hands, well above the 15 they needed to take control. The size of their majority depends on whether the GOP (Grand Old Party - the Republicans' nickname) can take others back.

Meanwhile, key seats in the Senate race remained on a knife edge. At least one recount was on the cards, raising the prospect that it could be days before it is known who will be in control there.

Democrats had made three of the six net gains they need to win, taking Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Ohio.

But they lost in Tennessee, leaving just three more races - in Virginia, Missouri and Montana - all of which they must win, and all of which are virtually neck-and-neck.

Democrat Claire McCaskill was projected to defeat incumbent Jim Talent in Missouri.

In Virginia, Republican incumbent George Allen and Democratic challenger Jim Webb were separated by a tiny proportion of votes in what will be a pivotal race.

With 99% of votes counted, Mr Webb was in the lead by 2,700 out of a total of 2.3 million cast and declared victory. But Mr Allen told supporters the counting would continue into Thursday.

it would appear america is slowly starting to realise that the current admin is doing nothing but running them into the ground.

i'm not particularly sure the democrats would do much better but i'm of the opinion that 6 years is more than enough time for george and co to show what damage they can do and the chances of them doing a 180 and doing anything positive and productive within the next 2 years is pretty slim.

How do they decide who gets to be Speaker of the House?

It's about bloody time. Didn't the last speaker of house deny the fact of global warming? Thank goodness he's gone and somebody (I hope) with some intelligence will take his place.

You have to remember that over 50% didn't vote for the current administration... So only a small amount of the ones that did, were waken. So it's not as big of a deal as it might seem. But yeah, any progress is good.

I'd honestly rather see Republicans in office than Democrats. With the Republicans, I don't have to worry nearly as much about them caring what I keep under my bed, both in terms of weapons and the amount of money.

Well, as bad as it sounds, we've still got Bush. Hopefully he'll veto any (as if there'll be exceptions, LOL) bad legislation that comes down the pike.

I'll be buying the Nancy Pelosi Commemorative Assault Rifle this afternoon.

yes everyone has the right to bear arms because as everone knows theres just lots of countrys looking to take over america and they all americans need guns to defend themselves!

You are deranged. An all Republican Congress sucks. They have done nothing except make the rich richer, impose on our civil rights and make Iraq a quagmire. Bush is unhappy with the results because once the Democrats take over the Senate he won't get anywhere with his crazy schemes with an opposition Congress. He'll be lucky if they don't impeach him for war crimes. He's had free reign for the last 6 years, it's about time he gets reeled in. He has made the government so cumbersome it can't even get out of it's own way. It says a lot that the voters were going to the polls to vote Democratic because over 60% are unhappy with the current Govt. It's time to take back control over the loose cannon this govt. has become.

I'm just as unhappy with the invasion and occupation of Iraq as anybody. If you've ever read anything I've written here, you'd see that, to the point where I've been labelled as rather extreme (wishing Saddam would choose to die attacking his guards instead of being executed, supporting home-grown insurgents, that sort of thing). I'm even more unhapping with the civil rights situation than you are.

I just don't want the recently-elected socialists ramming their agenda down my throat. I just want them to leave me alone. Bush has left me pretty much alone.
