Default Americans/ others idea of sports...

Most Americans will say they don't like football because it's slow and the scores are always small.

whilst liking things that resemble adverts with a little bit of sport in between and games with roughly the same amount of goals being scored but havign more points awarded.

But I digress

I don't get the whole high scoring thing... some of the best football and rugby games ever have been low scoring affairs whereas watching a team hammer another one 8-0 gets boring pretty fast.

whats it all about?

Bah - our football is great, perhaps. Exciting sometimes when its 7 - 14 on the two yard line - oh yes, but its roughly the same idea - we just want to be different so we have more points awarded then more points if its a field goal! Weee! I think any sport is exciting when it gets down to one goal away from victory! It does get rather boring when its something like 21 - 0 or something, it just gives you bragging rights. The best games ARE when its low scoring, because you have evenly matched teams - it shows the best of each player - its really a wonderful to watch. Hockey, oh thats wonderfully intense - not only because of the goaling system but because of all those fights - oh yes!! I think really any contact sport is exciting - beyond the scores. Even though I have a pleasure for gymnastics and ice skating as well.

I don't know about slow - baseball is much slower and is well loved here in the states.

As I was saying. I don't get how they go on about football being slow and boring when baseball and american football are incredibly slow to get going.

I've never heard anyone say this.

People play and like what they grow up with. Europeans like soccer, Canadians hockey and Americans are into football and baseball. What's the big deal? Wouldn't it be rather boring if everyone plays the same sports?

I grew up in Europe, ice hockey and soccer are the only sports I watch and enjoy. It is what I grew up with. Most Americans like to watch football and baseball - it reminds them of going to games when they were little, playing with friends out on the fields, etc. Why start getting into another sport when you have plenty already that keeps you busy?

On a side note, most kids nowadays play soccer instead of football. Less likely to get seriously injured when playing soccer than football. Besides, girls can play soccer, but hardly football. While I don't think that soccer will ever replace football or baseball, it certainly will become a lot more popular over once these kids grow up.

yep, completely agree with that.

they grow up with it and they are usually good in the sports they grow up with. so there are high quality games to watch on tv, the kids are inspired and the next generation will grow up with the same sport. no reason for any change.

in our class we had an american exchange student who could beat us all in basketball, even so he said he wasn't really good and in the US he got kicked out of a team because he was "too bad". on the other hand our exchange student who went to america was top scorer in the soccer team of his collage, even so i have to say he was probably one of the worst soccer players in our class. it's simply what they/we always play, already when we are 4 or 5 years old. and because of that, we won't change our prefered sports probably in the next decades...

and because we will never completely look the same at a "new" sport like we look at a sport we grow up with, we will never completely understand the enthusiasm of another nation for a different sport.

You have made 2 glaring errors in the above paragraph.

So who cares? You have your thing, and we have ours. Life goes on... Plus, I love how our game is lousy because it is different than yours. You won't ever hear me say that your football is lousy. Why? Because it makes no difference to me if people enjoy different things. As Spunky already said, the world would be a boring place if we all like the same things. Variety is good. Get over it.
