Don't let a handful of fools bring down the full nation witht heir idocy.

We got taught that stuff in primary 7 and I still remember it all so the Mirrors being creative with the comments or they've managed to come across a handful of idiots ion their survey. not too hard really.

and Neil. we do it to remember. You didn't have to go if you were conscripted but it was a different breed back in the day and most didn't give it a second thought to go and defend their land.

And I'm sure I'm not the only one thats offended by you brushing this off as something that should only be gave a passing thought.

It's to show respect and thank the people that died to defend what you know is ordinary.
But the real NEED why we have to remember it every year, is because we mustn't forget what the f*ck happened back then. Current states at some places prove this need.

and specifically I would have thought that those involved would like to do their best to forget it, seeing people they knew killed etc.
If one of your parents died would you like to forget about him/her just because he/she is dead?

I'm so sorry that my opinion isn't the same as everyone else's. Like I said I mean no offence to the people who died, but I personally don't see the need to do it every year. Do you have memorial days for people who died in wars in wars in past centuries?

And also I personally don't understand this need to be proud of where you are from. It seems that after wars and terrorist attacks (9/11 for example) countires unite and seem to suddenly care about only themselves.

I don't want to start an argument here, if you don't understand my opinion there's no need to insult me or anything, I don't pick on others for things they believe. I don't mean to offend anyone, just my opinions.

I don't really like history myself, except for a few "episodes" and some interesting figures. But I do amit it *is* important. It is important to remember where you come from, etc. Why don't you have memorials for other previous wars? Well, maybe because these are so recent and have shaped our world as it is today, for better or worse. I was reading a book a few months ago that was set in post-war England (though it really wasn't about the war) and there was this beautiful scene when a mum and her daughter are strolling in the park and two gardeners that had fought in the war stare at them thinking that's what they'd been fighting for. A future. It sounds simple but it's true. Your country today is what it is because lots of men died for it and in a way for you. Hence the need to think of them. That's what I think.

Don't get me wrong. I used to hate studying about wars in general. But those people were very brave to leave their lives and families behing and go fight for the unknown future.

With that I agree wholeheartedly!

This would be funny if it wasn't so sad!! I think it is shocking that people don't know what D-Day was or what it was for. These people died for our future and we don't even have the courtesy to remember that. If it wasn't for these people we would all be under some madman's rule or most probably dead or not even born to begin with.
Every year we have Remembrance day on May 4th and we celebrate Liberation day on May 5th, although I personally don't do anything to particularily remember these 2 days I think it is important that they are there as a constant reminder of when it did go wrong and that we should never let it happen again. These things can happen so quickly and a dictator comes into power before you know it. This could happen again and as soon as we forget that, we have sealed our own fate.
