Because back in the day kids actually had a family. It is a lot different now then it was back then. Not that I am agreeing with this study, as I don't think drugging kids up is the answer either. But looking at my students now, they have a lot more problems than I ever had.
The few cases these days that require medication would've required it 50 years ago. I'm thinking like paranoid schizophrenia with violent tendencies or something along those lines. I can say with confidence that 98% of the medicating that goes on today is just "doping," chemically altering students personalities and perceptions with conciousness altering pharmacuticals, just to make them more docile, to make them "fit in." That kind of experimentation has given us Kip Kinkel and Eric Harris at least, probably many more.

Its not the break-up of the family I don't think. Maybe not all of it. I don't think kids feel like life is worth living anymore. I think its primarily the public school's fault. Teach kids to move from activity to activity every 52 minutes (or however long) at the sound of a bell and they begin to think that nothing's worth doing. They percieve that the lessons they learn in school are meaningless, and when they spend 8 hours a day, 9 months a year, for 12 years out of their lives doing something they believe is meaningless (and a lot of it is) I'm surprised we don't have more problems. We encountered the same phenomenon when we tried to "civilize" Native American boys 100 years ago. They went stir crazy, rebelled in anyway they could. Now we just have the pharmacutical means to pacify those who find the system intolerable.

wait till you get to Uni and the course actually is half filler modules then you'll know what pointless learning is.

Did you hear about Viazac?
It's a new drug, a mix between Viagra and Prozac.
The effects? You still can't get it up but you don't give a sh*t.

Sorry, I couldn't resist...

On the topic, I think it's another occasion lost to deal with the real problems. Giving medication to children is just acting on the symptoms of a social disease and not the disease itself.
And Adrian, you must also consider that 50 years ago such problems were not detected or not reported as much as they are today.

BINGO

as cliched as it is. school sit he best ****ign time your ever going to have and Im sick of hearing people whinge about it because you get babied through the full thing. I had teachers trying to help me with a university application the other day and tell me about loans and stuff and I was like I know what im doing ive managed the past 2 years fine but they're so used to walking everyone through every little thing.

I realised this in my last year of school and I wish I had years before.

When I went away to Uni. my grandfather said to me that these were going to be the best years of my life, but I wouldn't realize it until later. He was right.

and you base that percentage on what exactly?

How many people do you know that are on anti-depressants and out of those people how many do you think don't need it and why do you think they don't need it? Have you spoken to them about it in all confidence? Is that what they told you?

Cause I really don't think you are more competent in the area of mental health than doctors who dedicate their lifes to it.

Your reaction is a very typical one for most people and it is mostly based on ignorance. It is the old belief that mental disease only comes in forms of schizophrenia or similar diseases. Depression is thought to affect people that "just don't want to be happy" and then will lock themselves into closets. When in truth they are all around you - they are your friends, your co-workers, your bosses..... and most don't live in closets thanks to modern medicine.

oh, and I think a lot more people should be on it as, due to the stigma, a lot of them don't seek help but rather continue to abuse their spouses, commit suicide, turn to illegal drugs, or simply live a lonesome life.
