Shows like this suck, but you can't deny that they're entertaining. I saw a bit of American Idol this Sunday morning while I was hanging around in my friends University common room. There were a bunch of nobheads who were crap but thought they were brilliant saying stuff like, "I've got pitch, I've got tune, and I look good! Why the hell are you saying no to me?" Then there was an oldish guy with Grey hair that came in and stole the show. He had a very good voice, but he won't win just because he has grey hair. That's one of the reasons why shows like that suck. They don't want talent to a great degree, they just want people who will look right, while being somewhat talented.
