I am a Christian. I've gone through periods of questioning my faith and beliefs and finding that peaceful feeling of faith that comes when you just KNOW it's right. I certainly don't have all the answers and don't understand everything, but I think you have to question to grow and if you are sincere in your search for understanding you will find it. It's an ongoing process.

I'm a moslem, and Sambo Chris is right. We don't have to pay anymoney to the Mosque, but once a year we have to pay "Zakat Fitrah" (give 2 1/2 litre of rice) to the poor people or orphand children. Or you can give your treasures/money to the Moslem Foundations or Mosque as "Shadaqah".
But,it's ok if you didn't give your money. You can not to be punished

that's fascinating Iwan!

both my mother and auntie were christened but we are not a religious family - they were christened out of superstition more than religious faith... so that they would "come on right"...

I'm not even remotely religious - but it's not something i boast about and in many ways i'm jealous of those people who are religious...

what i don't like about religion though is that it seems to be another way of reinforcing class or maintaining hierarchies... and even just at my college on a microscopic scale there are cliques ...

for example in the dining halls... you have all the Christians sat together on one table, they all walk around together in great numbers etc...

this is to start a discussion - it is a conversation i had with my Christian friend and I'm wondering what other people think about it...

do all christians think muslims are going to hell for believing in the wrong god? answer: yes... then ... do all muslims think christians are going to hell.... answer: yes...

my conclusion: well then if there really is a god surely i have a better chance of getting into heaven on the sole basis that while i didn't claim my undying love for god, i also didn't offend him by believing and worshipping the wrong one...

Answer NO, Who am I to judge, I leave that to God!!!!!!

Mr Rock, Surely not claiming your undying love is more likely to not get you in the pearly gates. He would know you would be worried about offending Him with any choices and Im sure HE would like any parent take this into account and love you right back however you prayed to him.

I have nothing against religion, but I hate the way the people (or soceity) tries to push their religious beliefs onto others. That's not to say in a discussion in the way it's put in here, or through religious programs, talks e.t.c, as they're optional, and people can chose wether or not they want to participate....

I've just got back home from a huge argument with my form teacher over religion...

At our college, we have an assembly, which now (they've suddenly decided) includes singing a hym. I've taken a stand against this, refusing to stand with everybody else. A teacher came over to me during the hym last week, and I walked out of the assembly, as I don't think it's right that I stand up for somethign I don't believe in..

I brought this up with my Form Teacher today, basically saying I don't want to offend anybody by staying sat down, but I don't believe in it, and won't take part. He said I'd have to get a note from home to confirm this. I told him I'm 18, and it's my beliefs, it's what I feel is right, so I'll write a note. He insisted that it's got to be from my parents. I basically told him there isn't even the slightest chance I'll bring in a note, I'll vouch for my own beliefs, and I won't have anybody else telling me "It's ok for him not to worship God"... I decide that!!!!!!!!!

I just hate the fact that this has been pushed onto me. I'm an adult, but I'm being told I have to worship somethign I don't believe in. Or at least, I'm being told that I have to compromise my own rights to believe what I want to belive!

This is the problem with religion as I see it.

that's just your opinion then... but what does the Pope - what does your religion - say of other religious believers???

What do you think of people who are religious but don't worship Jesus then... ie the more-Old Testament orientated followers ?

who is god? male, female, asexual, old, young, timeless, black, white, american, african ????

you are God Dawn, ok... 2 people want to get into heaven... 1 worshipped the ground the wrong God walked on, the other worshipped you... a 3rd person remained neutral...

you let the 2nd through, you reject the 1st - why do you turn away the 3rd? just for not kissing the ground you walk on... surely entrance to 'heaven' is not a popularity contest???

i think this partly answers my above question... but still surely entrance to heaven should be based on your deeds in life, and your earthly existence... not a spiritual dedication contradicting often the way you pyshically live your life ??
