Hey Mike what kind of school do you go to?
I'm Montreal, as for religion in school, you have a choice. each students choice either to do a religion class or to do a moral class( this is to make you learn ethic and other values without the religion)!

I think its a great system. it give the choice to everybody. it respect people belief... i'm not religous but some of my firend were and we still took the math and french class together, but once a week we got to either moral or religion class....

I belief should be like this... you hang around other people, you don't put pressure on them to believe the same thing as you, everybody get their own choice...

aaaaaaaah yes Iwan, one of the Five Pillars of Islam I am well versed in them (cursed RE!)

Over here (or certainly in North Yorkshire, and now South Yorkshire) we have Religious Education classes. Not many people really want to do them though and its like one of the lowest scoring subjects

I am not pro-religion and I am not anti-religion. That makes me indifferent.

I do think that religious beliefs are often pushed onto people. And in a way that people don't even notice that.

Many schools offer courses in religion. And not many schools offer courses in atheism. Which I never understood because if you want to give people the whole picture, you've got to teach them different viewpoints.

Religion/moral is not the real choice IMO. That is an obscure way to propagate religion. You see you associate being religious with being moral (you perceive religion/moral as a substitute for each other). From Math Logic it follows now that being non-religious equals being non-moral. Great. Religious propaganda achieved.

well sorry if I mislead you but moral classes were not at all link to religion!

What i did most of the time in my moral classes was to play cards, draw BJ stuff, fight with people that didn't like Bj...

that classes were pretty much useless, they were suppose to help us to "grow as responisble adult" but, well, we most of the time didn't care about being adult! the only thing remotely useful we didn't was to make our CV.

so I cannot say that class was an "obscure way to promote religion!"
Still, what I meant was that we had a choice to not do anything religious at all!!!

- what does your religion - say of other religious believers??? I dont have a religion, I have a lovely relationship with God. Its up to God what he thinks of religion and believers.

What do you think of people who are religious but don't worship Jesus then... ie the more-Old Testament orientated followers ? Answer as above.

Quote:
I leave that to God!!!!!!
who is god? male, female, asexual, old, young, timeless, black, white, american, african ???? God is love , love doesnt have a sexual type.

i think this partly answers my above question... but still surely entrance to heaven should be based on your deeds in life, and your earthly existence... not a spiritual dedication contradicting often the way you pyshically live your life ??[/quote]

The bible gives us commandments to live by, if the world lived by these commandments whatever their religion then the world would be full of love and peace. The most important commandment is to love your neighbour as you would yourself, this shows how important it is to God to love . So I think entrance is based on love which directs you to the kind of deeds in your life and the dedication to God.

Well, surely only the Christians would follow those commandments as other religions would regard them as "false"

You misunderstood. What you did in your moral class is NOT relevant.

You were given the choice between moral class and religion class. Doing that they make sure you associate being religious with being moral. And in a subtle way it is hinted that being non-religious is equal to being non-moral.

But maybe I should add a little bit of Quebec history, so you will understand that we are a really special ( weird) place!
in the 1940's until late 1960's, we were ruled by a "dictator" ( a little bit like McCarthy in the State!). This dictator used to control the people by the Church. You had to do what church said .. and so on!

finally, inthe late 1960's, Quebec caught up with Peace and love (later them other country but we still did). We threw out this dictator and the chruch lost almost all tis power. we had this period call "Quiet Revolution" where we had a big revolution without killing people!

Today Quebec is a place were religion doesn't really exist at all. Even if some catholic chruch still remain, people under 70are usually not religious. Here i'm speaking about most 7 million people in Quebec. (From what I've Heard Quebec is not like the USA, where I've heard religion was still really present!)

The power of religion is gone, we don't make the association of if you;re not regilous, you are not moral! this association is dead, so that why from my view of a pure Qubec citizen , I cannto agree with you.

( now the governement is even considering to take out religion class (the only real vestige of the non-existent power of religion) out of school, so everybody would write their CV instead!)

It's not about you. If you have strong beliefs, you have strong beliefs. Think about society in general. Lots of people have no beliefs on the issue. They just go with the flow. Those are the people they want to become and stay religious. Because they want to support church institution since it helps control people.

Anyaway, those are just my thoughts. I did study lots of Philosophy.
