It is true, but I don't understand what the big deal is. I find it a bit weird to tell other people "merry christmas" when I am not sure they indeed celebrate christmas. I wouldn't know what to do with someone telling me "happy hanukkah"  Just avoid it and say "happy holidays" - easy, non-offensive, and true.

Interesting. At first I thought it was weird but now I agree with you! I thought you caouldn't say Happy Christmas to anyone now I see it's when you're talking to someone you don't know or for TV / radio etc. It makes sense, though.
Still, I think people understands what you mean even if you get their religion ffestivity wrong

It's the good wish that counts, isn't it?
