Finally, near 125 civils dead
 Blasts went off on a long-distance, high-speed, train and two suburban trains packed with commuters. At the time of the explosions one of the trains was located at one of the capital's two main railway stations, Atocha. At the Atocha station emergency services attended to hundreds of injured as local hospitals issued an urgent appeal for blood donations. Rescue services official, Cesar Gomez, confirmed there were many was injured at Atocha. People in tears and bloodied clothing were seen walking away from the station in droves. "I saw many things explode in the air. I don't know what it was - horrible,'' said Juan Fernandez, 50, a civil servant who had been on a platform waiting to go to work. "People started to scream and run, some bumping into each other and as we ran there was another explosion. "I saw people with blood pouring from them, people on the ground.'' A female eyewitness told Spanish National Radio the scene at the Atocha station was "hellish". "I can see people inside the remains of the train," the unidentified woman said. Spanish officials said late in February that police had averted a bomb attack by ETA planned for the election campaign period.
