There is a little more to the story. The Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees because they thought his career was over. He was a pitcher at the time. So Ruth went to the Yankees and became the greatest hitter (not pitcher) of all time. The Italian word for Babe is Bambino which is why you'll sometimes see it called the curse of the Bambino.
Since then, 1918, Boston has not won one world series so their poor playing has been blamed on the curse. We'll see how they do this year.
