And you know this for a fact because how?

It's not just boybands who follow what the record company tells them to do. I would say 90% of artists do so in the beginning of their careers. BSB and nsync made some major decisions in their careers after the success happened. Such as leaving their manager, hiring their own people, suing JIVE for record contract disputes, etc.
Sometimes it takes success to happen before doors are opened for you to have any control.
you're right Naomi, but so much people just ignore this ... they don't know because they are not in this "strange world" i could say ! they think they know everything about record compagnies, management and etc ... ! sure, you know it's not so simple !
Thanks Jess! You're right - nothing about the music biz is simple. And once you're a part of it, you learn a lot. Many think they know, but until you're in it, you have no idea.

I voted for They All Suck. Just not my type of music.

Although I do have a sick attraction to the Backstreet Boy's, I Want It That Way.

That is all I will say on the subject.

I don't know this I assume this. I Think its very strange that they all sound the same (they do!, you seems to know quite a lot about boy bands, so you probably know this as well) , they all uses the same producer (almost every one has used Max martin, not take that, but the rest...), they all LOOK the same, you don't find this strange? well I do...

suing a record company is not something that shows that these bands are independent. I think it means the opposite, when (who ever it was who did it!) suide the recordcompany they probably discovered that the record company had been bamboozled them! so...

boy bands are a pain! thats a fact, I don't like them, will never like them, and they aren't real musician!
you have a very good and valid point. But no, I do not see them as all the same. You're right about the Max Martin thing. He is a well known pop writer that creates incredible hooks. That's why pop singers go to him. He's the flavour of the moment.
Artists go to certain producers for their special brand of sound. i.e. every hot artist seems to be going to the Neptunes/Pharell Williams for their production because they have a hot sound and they are "in" thing. I'm sure Bon Jovi go to Luke Ebbin because they like what he does for the band (but I am NOT going to open that can of worms!)

If anyone wants a record contract, they WILL do what is told of them. If they didn't, they'd be out on the streets faster than you can blink. Once they've sold a few million CD's, that's when the story changes.

As for sounding the same, Justin Timberlake does not sound like Ronan Keating to me. Not even look alike. So I guess because Bon Jovi and Aerosmith are both rock bands, they sound and look the same? Unlikely.

Thanks for engaging in this debate with me!
I saw that you posted something about lonenlieness, so...
No that was just because of that! I do think this is a very intersting subject...

I don't see Roan keating as a boyband, he is playing mature music for mature people. justin, oooh! i don't like that guy, he seems to be a fake person, a fix! i don't why all girls like him, maybe you could tell me that.

Bon jovi and Aerosmith a from two diffrent kinds of rock categories. Aerosmith from the glamrock and bon jovi from pop-metal/hair metal.
and we was talking about boy bands, which comes from the same category, so thats like compareing britney spears and pink, both from the pop category, but very diffrent, as Bon jovi and Aerosmith!

boy bands are making trend music they uses the same producers, and they always tries to by quite similiar to eachother, which is one of the reasons why I hate them, can't they just do something speciall!!!

yes everybody who wants a record deal do what ever people tell them to do, bon jovi as well (she don't know me...). even if you has sold 5 million albums you don't have so much to put up against the record company, so I do belive that people are making descions over their heads. Mariay carry (can't spell her name ) lost her record contract, and she has sold over 135 million albums!

I also enjoy this conversation.

The statement you made "they all try to sound alike" is not accurate, based on my idea that you have likely never owned/downloaded/listened to a full Nsync/BSB album. I do suppose the earlier material by these bands sounded much alike, due to the Swedish pop factory writing their hits.

NSYNC released an album in 2001 called "Celebrity". They experimented with many sounds and styles, merging together to create something unlike many of today's pop albums. They then branded this new sound as "dirty pop". And it is different. You may say, pop is still pop. But this album blurred the edges of the genre.

The Justin solo album was a surprise to me when listening to it. I expected many NSYNC styled songs, but instead got the R&B flavour of the 70's and 80's fused with today's beats. The kid did something that isn't the norm for NSYNC. It'd very retro. And now it's a trend, with the release of Jennifer Lopez's CD "This Is Me - Then". She proceeded to do the same kind of flashback Justin did.

The fascination with Justin Timberlake is something that awes me a bit. Many think of NSYNC and immediately picture him. Some even label him as the "Lead singer". As great of a singer as he is, it's unfortunate to me, because the star of the show, in my book, is JC Chasez. He's an understated talent. Yet Justin gets the attention. A great deal of Justin's fanbase is based on his looks, and it's sad. Because he is a talented individual with vocal ability. But before this image thing is considered a reason to dislike boybands, remember that Jon Bon Jovi is also a good looking guy and there are misguided people out there who don't give a damn about a Bon Jovi record and just think he's hot. I think being good looking AND talented can be more of a curse than a gift, as far as earning respect goes. It's not like they can help it.

I am a songwriter and singer. I like attending industry workshops and gatherings.

and ...

boybands are not making music that is the trend. The genre OF pop music is a trend in itself. What styles define pop come and go. But pop is always there, taking on new forms constantly. It never truly goes away.
