The statement you made "they all try to sound alike" is not accurate, based on my idea that you have likely never owned/downloaded/listened to a full Nsync/BSB album. I do suppose the earlier material by these bands sounded much alike, due to the Swedish pop factory writing their hits.

NSYNC released an album in 2001 called "Celebrity". They experimented with many sounds and styles, merging together to create something unlike many of today's pop albums. They then branded this new sound as "dirty pop". And it is different. You may say, pop is still pop. But this album blurred the edges of the genre.

The Justin solo album was a surprise to me when listening to it. I expected many NSYNC styled songs, but instead got the R&B flavour of the 70's and 80's fused with today's beats. The kid did something that isn't the norm for NSYNC. It'd very retro. And now it's a trend, with the release of Jennifer Lopez's CD "This Is Me - Then". She proceeded to do the same kind of flashback Justin did.

The fascination with Justin Timberlake is something that awes me a bit. Many think of NSYNC and immediately picture him. Some even label him as the "Lead singer". As great of a singer as he is, it's unfortunate to me, because the star of the show, in my book, is JC Chasez. He's an understated talent. Yet Justin gets the attention. A great deal of Justin's fanbase is based on his looks, and it's sad. Because he is a talented individual with vocal ability. But before this image thing is considered a reason to dislike boybands, remember that Jon Bon Jovi is also a good looking guy and there are misguided people out there who don't give a damn about a Bon Jovi record and just think he's hot. I think being good looking AND talented can be more of a curse than a gift, as far as earning respect goes. It's not like they can help it.

I am a songwriter and singer. I like attending industry workshops and gatherings.
I was exaggerating about that they sound the same, sorry!

I have not listen to Nsyncs latest album, and I'm not sure I will, so i have to believe you, which I of course do.
But, experimenting and testing new things is also a type of popmusic, everybody wants too like the things that none has done before, if you understands what I mean. take pink for instance, nobody has done what she has done before (ok, their are others, but they have not been as big as pink...) and she sells quite a lot of records ( ).
Nsyncs latest album was (or perhaps is?) probably very successful, which of course not only was because they are a bunch of good looking guys.

Often singers from groups tries to try new stuff when they are doing solo album, for instance, richie jon and mick jagger (bad example I know...). I think they do this because they want to develope as musician, which justin probably wanted as well. It did quite well on the charts did it? Which once agains shows that those people who buys nsync album and other boybands doesn't care about whats on the album. of course some of the probably liked it, but i don't think the 13 year old girls who bought the album did like those 70' tones, or perhaps they did and I'm completely wrong...

the music world has during a very long time been focused on how people look, you probably know this, after all you are a part of the music business!
jon and justin has something in common, they both look quite well, and the both can sing (and they both sell because of their looks!).
this make a lot of people very upset, and of course its wrong that peoples looks should be the most important thing, but its a fact, so the only thing we can do is to accept it (and I, to be honest, rather look at a beautiful woman then a ugly one...).

There's one boy band that doesn't suck, and it's not on the list. It's New Kids on the Block! They were before any of these, and they were better than any of these put together and multiplied by two!!!

But still: "forget about those boy bands, you have a man band on stage!"

A Trip for two on the memory lane

Well anyway, I have something to say to this "boy band topic"

I respect those who write the music for succesful boy bands. It is amazing how a year after year, the same people can create music that so many people like. I am not saying that I like the music they make, but hey, you have to give some credit to people who write those songs, they must do something right because the boy bands are popular.

They all suck. Why there is any other option is beyond me.

I have never heard of most of these boy bands, but I erm, uh, voted for, um, Backstreet. Although I don't like them now, I used to. On a road trip last summer, I was listening to one of their CDs (Black and Blue) and Cross Road in the car. I sadly admit that I listened to the BSB CD more, but Bon Jovi won out in the end. (Both CDs were checked out of the library. I bought Cross Road last November, but to this day, I do no own a single Backstreet CD.)

Heh, here's an extra note: the newspaper I read one day had a concert review of one of Nick Carter's solo concerts and said that he was trying to express his "inner Bon Jovi". Turns out he can actually play guitar! So, while his rival, Justin, is taking the R&B route, Nick's trying to be a rocker!!! Too funny!

I didn't vote. Have not heard all of them.

We should distinguish between musicians and performers. N'Sync and such are performers. And when I see them on TV I mostly enjoy their performances. You need talent and lots of training to perform like they do.

I thought N'Sync was very good at the last Grammys with their tribute to BeeGees.

And not so long ago I watched some R&B award ceremony. Justin Tim. performed. I didn't like the text of his song much, but I liked his performance overall. I can definately understand why young girls go crazy for him. Good voice. Great dancer. Interesting guy. Teens need to idolize someone. It might as well be him.

I like your interpretation! You're right about a difference between performers and musicians. But I see it as this: Britney Spears is a performer. NSYNC are too, but also musicians. I consider the voice to be an instrument just as much as a guitar. Britney is a brilliant performer and dancer, but not a singer.

As for the NKOTB!!! My favourite was STEP 3! :P Jordan rules.

Erik - I am glad we had this convo. You know how to argue a point.
