WFAB.com: ...The NAACP said the church burnings were “domestic terrorism"...targeting people because of their skin color and faith.
The fires began on March 26 (2019), when St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre burned to the ground. A second church fire within St. Landry Parish happened a week later on April 2, at the Greater Union Baptist Church. On April 4, Fire District #3 responded to a fire at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church on Highway 182 in Opelousas...The churches were empty at the time of each fire and no one was hurt.
Holden Matthews, 21...was arrested and charged with three counts of simple arson of a religious building. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years.
“We can now confirm all three of these fires are intentionally set and all three of these fires are related,” State Fire Marshal Butch Browning...said.
The motive is still under investigation, but...Matthews may have been influenced by “black metal music” ...an aggressive, fast-tempo, heavily distorted sub-genre of heavy metal music with origins in Scandinavia. In the early 1990s, a rash of church arsons in Norway by fans of the music were described by leaders of the movement as acts of protest against Christianity ruling over a country rooted in Paganism.

The early 1990s were nearly 20 years ago; the suspect was born in the late 1980s.

BuzzFeed.com: (A) friend of Matthews (said he) may have been “inspired” by Lords of Chaos, a (January 2019) violent horror biopic about the Norwegian black-metal scene in the ‘90s...In the...film, Kristian "Varg" Vikernes, one of the subculture’s most influential musicians, murders another artist and sets several churches on fire...
Vikernes...complained about...the “fat Jewish actor" (who)...played him. He served 15 years in prison, and in 2014, French authorities convicted him of inciting racial hatred (against) Jews and Muslims in his blog... In Facebook comments, Matthews said he liked the film, but didn’t take it too seriously...(A)bout five weeks ago...he wrote...“It’s a good movie, yea it’s a ‘Hollywood’ movie but hey it’s still fun...the only people against it...listen to everything Varg says...”

Apparently Holden was involved in a band called
Vodka Vultures (maybe alcoholism "inspired" him) and one of his now defunct Facebook account posts referenced the Norse pagan god Odin.
The movie was released three months ago. And more important, it is neither Christianity in general nor black Christianity in particular that a pagan extremist would hate, but ANY religion that worships only one god. "Drilling down" to targeting black Christians is therefore self-defeating as a pagan extremist statement.

WFAB: Matthews (is) the son of St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Roy Matthews...A spokesperson for the FBI says Matthews’ father was heartbroken when he found out...Matthews had no prior arrests and no history of violence. Officials dispelled rumors that Matthews’ father had turned him in to authorities...

If he has been living under the roof of Matthews Senior, his father's alleged heartbreak could turn into quite a credibility problem. I mean, maybe Senior is really heartbroken because Junior got caught so quickly. I would wonder what he taught his children well about racism, but that would be knee-jerk stereotyping!
