I wouldn't actually 'call' someone a brother or a sister, but to describe a certain relationship, I've used that term before. As in 'he's like a brother to me' --- that sort of stuff.

What exactly freaks you out about it? I mean, surely somebody calling me sister - out of the blue would freak me a little, but then if a male friend would say it to clarify the sort of relationship we have, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I agree with Seb here - most of the time you love the family you grew up with - but a special friendship can be even closer because it's one you chose. On the other hand, I'm an only child so maybe I can't really compare brothers and sisters.

You automaticly love the family you grow up with, but friendship itself is a thing that can grow big no matter how long you know eachother. I think that loving a friend is more special than loving a brother or sister.

I agree. That's a good way to put it. I'm much closer to some of my friends than I am my brother. I'm closer to one friend than to anyone else in the world. She tells me all the time, "I'll always be your friend. You know too much." LOL I'd go to my friends for emotional support before I'd turn to my family.

So what the differnce?. If u call someone, he is like a brother to u, isn't it same meaning he fall same catigory as ur brother do?.

Yes this person joked me as brother in out of the blue and thats why it freak me out. Its not like we had friendship, where we used to call each other ' brother' or 'sister'. Actually we had/have relatioship where u can call anything but 'borhter' or 'sister' kind of relationship. One thing for sure i never open up much with a person i call 'sister' (especially my person things).

I don't see whole point of her suggesting or even joking about it (which obviously very bad joke). Unless she really want to change the relationship we had or she is not really happy with what we had...... thinking her as my sister make me sick....

True, here we say you choose your friends but not your family.
I have two really good friends i know them since i was 14 years old and even if sometimes we see each others only once a year they are nearly like sisters for me but nearly only. And i have some very very good friends who live closer, i see some of them nearly everyday but i wouldn't call them my sisters not even 50 % if you see what i mean, it's not the same friendship.
It's like when parents tell their kids to call their friend auntie for example i think of my sister who are the real aunties of my kids, i wouldn't do that to them.

I don't see anything wrong in calling someone your brother or sister, although I've never done that. And I think that you see more in it than it's meant to be, Allwyn. It sure wouldn't freak me out.

Do you find it equally offensive if someone calls their friends 'babe, honey, girlfriend?' --- cause I do that all the time and it not once occured to me that I might actually freak somebody out with it.
