Default Cat Lovers please read

Hi,

Just taken my 12 yr old cat to the vets , he has cancer of the ear, to much sun bathing!!!!. So both ears will need to be chopped off, its a straight forward procedure and is done more often now. He will recover quickly etc as apart from this he is in good health. Just wondering if anyone has had this done to their cats. He is going to look like an otter !

Thanks.

Dawn

I've never heard of that problem before! Poor kitty! I'm glad for you that it's something that can be taken care of quickly. Was he an outside cat or did he stay inside?

Aww, I'm really sorry. My actual kittens are only 8 weeks old but we had cats earlier. But none of them ever had this.

I'm really sorry. Hopefully after the surgery your cat will be fine again.

Sorr to hear that.

One of my parents dogs has cancer, he got tumours in his mouth last Xmas which were cancerous but they removed them, albeit they had to remove part of his jaw, however they have come back and the vets have said its's terminal. He isn't in any pain at the moment, still lively as ever but the minute he starts to show any suffering he going to be put down.

Hope your cat makes a full recovery, i have seen a lot of cats like that lately, if its doing it to them what can the sun be doing to us?

Hi Becky,

I have 2 cats both biological brothers , the one with cancer does mainly stay outside, he loves sunbathing always has, 12 yrs of sunbathing has taken its toll, even though I have used sun cream and parasols to help, the sun here this year was the hottest ever so thats why it seems to have happened.

Ive read on websites that in Aus + Florida the sun is so intense that it is quite normal for cats to get cancer of the ears.

Thanks for your messages EVERYONE.

Dawn

Dawn, that's terrible!! I've actually heard this before. It usually happens to cats that are fair furred.. vets here have warned people if their cat is a sun worshipper to put sunblock on their ears and nose, I always thought it would be an impossible task to put sunscreen on a cat, but it seems that we should.
Buy your cat lots of treats and give him a big hug from me in Holland.

I've always had cats and never saw this problem but my cats are usually indoor cats. I had a dog in California that I was warned about getting cancer of the nose if she stayed outside too much. Apparantly there was little cloud cover in Caifornia and the dogs' nose got burned in the hot sun daily. I had to put sunscreen on the dogs nose everytime she went out - she and I both hated that!
