Paper towel + foot. That's how we do it 'round my house.

Actually, I just asked my mom and she says carpet clearner or baking soda works very well as our cat also has his accidents.

Also - put pepper down in the spot after you've cleaned it and the cat will stay away. Otherwise they'll continue to pee there as they've marked the territory

There are a lot of pet stain odor removers like Frebreeze, Out, and Resolve. Or, you can make a paste of baking soda and water and put it on the spot, cover it up for a while and it should absorb the odor. I always put baking soda in the litter boxes to help with the odor too.

We used to use just plain white vinegar when my dog was a puppy. It's supposed to neutralize the odor so they don't keep going back to that spot to pee. Baking soda works well too. Also, a product called Odo-Ban. I don't know if it's available in England, but it works well if you can find it.
