Default Computer problem

Recently my screen "disappears" a bit.. it moves down. So on top of my screen is a black space. Is this a monitor problem or a computer problem. It moves up again, after a while, but it is really annoying as the toolbar goes down and then I have to shrink the screen to use the toolbar. Any suggestions??

Is it a laptop or a normal desktop? if it's a laptop i would suggest plugging an external monitor into it to see whether the problem persists.

From your description it's a monitor problem though. If it was the graphic processor, you'd have some sort of spots or lines showing up.

Some GFX/Monitor specs would be handy here but hey ho...

This could be the GPU making incorrect decisions (simply put) which leads to it starting the output too low down, or it could be the CRT 'misfiring'. If LCD it should be a computer (GPU) problem. Try this:

Right click on your desktop, click properties.

Open the Settings tab and slide the slider to the very bottom, for the worst resolution (640x480 or 800x600 most likely) then click apply.

Now you can either restart the computer or skip to the next step. I'd restart.

Choose your original resolution and click apply. This should reset the GFX unit whether on-board or a seperate card and it should start applying the colour to the right part of the screen.

Of course do the daft stuff like unplugging the lead and putting it back in solidly.

If it persists try the monitor with another PC or the GFX card (unless you use on-board) with another monitor.

If it's an LCD monitor it should have an auto button on it. Press it to see if it adjusts the monitor and the image is correct. If yes then it's probably a monitor problem. Try using another monitor if you have one. If it's a graphics card problem you could try with more recent drivers. Is the image sliding down or it disappears and reappears?

It's sliding down. It corrects itself after a while though.. but it keeps happening and more frequently too.

It's probably a monitor problem. Try with a new one.

Thanks! It does seem to be a monitor problem... I've figured out that if I hit the monitor then it goes back to normal again.. not ideal but will have to work until I get a new one!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!
