Default contemplating getting engaged :-S

k so on tuesday night i was thinking about getting engaged to my girlfriend.

then i sobered up and realised the stupidity of the idea.

but now i'm back i don;t think it's that bad an idea.

short story: we've been buds for like 5 years and were best fr9ends before we started going out. been going out for 20 months. never argue or fight and we can live together alone cos we've done it before for a few weeks.

i know that i'm going to marry her one day so y not get engaged now?

i even know where i'm going to do it. theres this little beach place down the west coast called Maidens and it has a cliff edge bit that is one of the most beautiful places u'll ever see in your life and my girlfriend loves it there.

now i'm pretty much an old fashioned guy n i think the only person who should know i;'m going to propose to her that knows us should be her dad when i ask for her hand. i know it's old and cliched but i think it shows some respect to the family y'know.

anyways theres alot of diversity in here form people who r married, engaged and have been married so i want to know all ur opinions.

You are far too young to get engaged, if I where you, you should enjoy life for about an other 10/15 years and after that you can think about gettin engaged.

fair point man but i've done my fair bit of living it up to be honest i don;t think i;d be here if i tried to keep the same pace for the next decade and im being deadly serious.

as i said she is the one so it's just a matter of then or now.

I think you should wait a bit for your own sake. It's a pretty big step in your life.

I agree with Thierry. Why do you need to get engaged? To prove that you are committed? You don't need to get a ring to do that.
Besides, 18 is way too young!!

I mean I love my girlfriend too, but it's not necessary when you are that young to get engaged. I understand that you are really in love with her and if she loves you too, than everything will be just fine at the end.

Very true. I also feel that engagement is outdated. It used to mean something, but knowadays?? If you really want to commit, move in together. But an engagement is no guarentee either.
