Default Conversion for Love?

What r people's views about converting to & then actively following a religion purely on the grounds of Love?

Interested on views from ppl that are non-religious as well as those that r religious

Absolutely not.... I wouldn't give up the thing I believed in for another girl. I'll be sure to make that loud and clear to the ladies. LOL

Interesting topic. I could never do that, I'm an atheist and I don't see how I could ever be anything different - I'd be lying to myself and the other person. That being said I was going to "subscribe" to a religion (any Christian one I emailed the Lutheran Church asking how to become Orthodox and vice versa thanks to an email cockup) to have a Church wedding, but I was planning on just renouncing it a week or so later.

My friend and housemate is a religious nut and he was telling me that he gave his girlfriend an extra 12 months (she doesn't know this), and if at the end of it she shows no signs of converting to Christianity, he will not continue the relationship.

The way I see it, he's an idiot for that and is being cruel for her. You have to think about the future yes, but if you fall in love with someone you do so warts and all, so to speak. In other words, if someone is not a Christian it's probably not going to be kept a secret, so why should you expect them to change later. You might not even love that person after they become a Christian, since it might change so many other aspects of their personality.

There's a religious and non-religious view then

As far as I know, you follow a religion because you truely believe in something. Love can't make you believe in anything - you'll have to do that yourself. Otherwise you'll be lying to both yourself and to your significant other.

Well i'm not going to change what i beleieve in ... But i dont mind spending my whole life with someone who beleieve in totally different thing or relgion as long she dont mind with mine and respect my belief....

I know its hard to make it work without one converating to other relgion but it defnetly workable if both are willing make it work..One of my best friend who is hindu married to a christen and both didn;t change there relgion and they are happy and they both celebrate each other festival and respect each other belief... Although my friend admits its really hard at time but they do have very understandable parents which always helps.. So its all depend on both the couple really....

What if the couple are fine no matter what, but the parents aren't understandable. Eg: The girl / boy will lose their parents if their partner does not convert? If you love your partner, would you go through with it to ensure she keeps her parents?

I would not change what I believe for any reason. If I was willing to marry a girl who was religious I would have accepted that, so why shouldn't she?

I don't know if I could be in a relationship with someone who was extremely religious though. Not just for the reason that they may try to convert me, but I'd want to live in a household, with possible children, where we just try to be good people, not worrying about trying to please some god that there is no proof that it exists.

Interesting topic. I wouldn't convert to another religion or another form because my significant other had another system of beliefs. I'm probably lucky when it comes to religion - I believe certain things that are pretty mainstream but can't be labelled Catholic or Lutheran or Baptist. I just keep my faith to myself and occasionally attend the church I believe is most harmonious (I hate that word) with my beliefs.

On the other hand, I wouldn't expect a significant other to conform to my beliefs. That goes against my religion. If it were seriously a problem, I'd try and find some sort of compromise, but since I'm not in that situation, I can't think what that compromise would be. The next door neighbors are Catholic and Lutheran, and come Sunday they go to seperate churches. I'd probably try something like that.

Adrian

nah i doubt i'd end up with anyone fervently into religion in the 1st place but i wouldn't be converting either way unless I believed it and actually wanted to.

Not got a problem with religion at all but i do with people who force theirs upon you n someone makign you convert for them is about the biggest example of that.
