This reminds me of something I heard today. One of my students, who has a phobia about going to school (don't ask) is overweight too. He is constantly trying to get me to give him candy or any type of food for that matter. His parents are now taking him to a hypnotist in order to help in lose weight. The kid is 11!! Why not take him outside and play with him or perhaps make sure he eats properly.

Of course you could look at it that they are at least trying to help him, but to me they are passing the responsibility onto someone else. They should be taking care of the problem.

how do you know they don't do that as well?

Seems like the kid is a compulsive eater and I think that deeper psychological issues could be in play than merely going outside or feeding the kid raw vegetables (broccoli and tomatoes, as carrots have way too much sugar and aren't nearly as healthy as claimed :P)

I think too much is made of parents needing to take responsibilities of their children and not passing it on to other people. This is a very easy thing to declare if you haven't raised a bunch yourself. I only say this because I had all these high flying ideas of how I'll raise my kid and I'll be doing everything perfectly, though real life isn't always compatible with perfection.

As far as the cookie monster --- I don't see the point of the cookie monster pushing health food - it's the cookie monster for crying out loud.

As a parent if I feel that the character of a TV show does not convey the same values as I would like, I just turn off the TV. Simple.

WHAT?! Now that's just strange. What's wrong with Baa Baa Black Sheep?
because the word black in anything is obviously offensive to ethnic minorities or so the PC brigade would like you to think.

In school now it's a chalk board (though we don;'t seem to be prone to offense because it's still a white board)

I'd be more bothered that they felt the need to change it incase it pissed me off to be honest because it;s just ****ing dumb.

but i digress...

there's nothing wrong with teaching kids healthy eating and one of th ebest mediums through that is TV. If we weren't susceptible to it at least on some level there wouldn't be adverts so what's the harm in using it for something good?

It IS easy to declare because it is how it's supposed to be in the first place.

I am confused. Of course parents need to take responsibility of their childrens upbringing. But I don't think that people really can judge whether or not certain parents push off responsibility (you can in certain individual cases but not as a generic statement).

Because the parents are enablers. They have raised not one but two children who are afraid to go to school. Because of this, the student was put on home instruction for a bit and allowed to attend whatever classes he "likes" at the regular school. There is an entire list of issues I could go into, but I base my conclusion on this kids history. He basically gets whatever he wants, food included. Now I will have to learn the buzz word so he stops harassing me for food.

I agree, but I do think that his parents helped his psychological issues along just a bit.

Seriously? I can't recall that.
It was in England in the 70's. It only lasted a couple of weeks.. but still.. I was devastated that there was no Tom and Jerry to watch!
