There are so many types of issues and just as many types of counselling and therapy theories...Whether it works or not can be down to the indivduals involved more so than the therapy/counselling given.

Interesting how this is often the view of people who use drugs recreationally.

I generally quite agree - I would hate to be robbed of the peaks of my personality.

because you are under the impression that medication changes the 'peak' of your personality?

That is a very common misconception and unfortunately a prime reason why people rather live miserable than get the help they need and so much deserve.

As for therapists: it is my belief that you will get out of it what you put into it. If you go into a session thinking the person is full of it, you will leave disappointed and in the same state as you went into it. If you are open and do your homework (yes there might be homework) and you really really go along with it, you may be extremely surprised about the outcome. Of course none of this happens over night - it's a long process and progress may not be noticed until years later.

I thought the question was regarding therapy. Talking is not therapy. Go talk to your friend or neighbor - neither will be able to guide you through therapy.

Talk is cheap.

Educate me?

I have no moral objection to antidepressants. A worry about addiction perhaps, but yes, also the viewpoints of a small number of friends who say their personality has become "levelled" at both extremes.
