we just got taught the obvious stuff:

my name is, i live in, what hobbies do you have, ich sehe gern fussball spiele (is that right? i haven't done German for 5 years since I did French instead)

Seems like the capital letters cause some problems

But it's impressive that you still know that after 5 years of not using it.

We didn't really have much choice at school. I would have rather done French. In our first year we started studying German or French, determined by which tutor group we where in.

When choosing our GCSE's, it wasn't a case of "would you like to do german", more of a "you have to do german". I guess it's another qualification for me, although only a low grade one.

I know each country has different education systems, but in the UK we do GCSE's.

We go to primary school between the ages of 5-11. We then go to high school between 11 and 16. In the last 2 years of high school we prepare special pieces of coursework, as specified by the exam board. We then sit the end of year exams, and these exams and coursework make up the marks. The coursework is usually worth about 30-50% of the overall mark, with the rest laid on the exam scores.
