No, everyone on this ****ing board / the internet seems to be terminally depressed, I just pity them for sitting around feeling sorry for themselves, doesnt affect me at all.

Depressed people can influence your mood, but as someone else said, it is not contagious. However, if you live in the same house (for example when your partner or one of your parents is depressed) it can have such influence on your life that you also get a depression.

clinically depressed people don't feel sorry for themselves. That isn't exactly the problem.

Good for you to not be affected at all - it doesn't show much though. :P

Having a gloomy feeling and being "down" are different from clinical depression. Yes, being around a fun crowd will make you more happy and being around negative creeps will not make you particularly fun. But all those things are not true depression. They are just feelings - depression is a mental illness.

If I read depression, I think of clinical depression - not the feeling of sadness. Very very big difference, though people use the terms interchangably.

I do agree that being with a depressed person is usually not fun and as such people may feel sad as well.
I know what you mean. I don't know which type Panama meant so I interpreted (maybe wrongly) as being around "sad" (depressed on colloquial terms) people. It makes me sad and brings me down and unless I'm on a very bright day I'm terrible at cheering people up, so I usually sort of go down with them.

But being around people who are clinically depressed makes me sad too because I just don't know how to help either and I feel very self-conscious. While the previous sad ones will usually cheer up after a few days. These will have to take medicine and follow a treatment, etc.

A very difficult matter for me to deal with

Having a depressed person around doesn`t make you depressed. It all depends on th etype of person you are and how much you let people have influences on your mood. My husband had a few years ago a very bad depression..when I would let myself go with him..my kids would have been very very lonelyand sad. I won`t ever let myself dragged into another ones mood. I am what I am...sometimes I feel sad or want to cry because not everything in live goes the way I want it to..but I keep on focussing on th egood things .
Some people are always going through some depression, that`s a sort of being ill...but you shouldn`t be going with them. If someone has gotten the flu you are not pretending you have it too, have you? Well, look at a depression th esame way. People are sick when they are depressed, it`s not something you will get from them.

Just always look on th ebright side of live...it works( mostly)

I don't have many friends who are ever down never mind properly depressed but if was hanging around people who were always moping, i'd tell them to get a grip of themselves long before it rubbed off on me.
