Having a gloomy feeling and being "down" are different from clinical depression. Yes, being around a fun crowd will make you more happy and being around negative creeps will not make you particularly fun. But all those things are not true depression. They are just feelings - depression is a mental illness.

If I read depression, I think of clinical depression - not the feeling of sadness. Very very big difference, though people use the terms interchangably.

I do agree that being with a depressed person is usually not fun and as such people may feel sad as well.
